20/20 Without Glasses ads

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

In the latest issue of Countryside, there were two different classifieds for a product/program to correct your vision by using exercises, charts,,etc. Has anybody used such a program and had good experience with it? Especially for nearsightedness?

I haven't seen the ads, but visual training has been used for eons to correct different conditions such as crossed eyes and various optical problems. I'm not one to trust ads, but would check with an eye professional who specializes in visual training. One thing I wouldn't trust (and this is just MHO), is the laser surgery to correct vision; one slip of the laser and you could be blind for life.

The Bates Method does work -- the theory is that eyes are muscles which must be exercised correctly, and that glasses are like crutches which allow your ocular muscles to atrophy. Aldous Huxley, who had been taught Braille because his eyes were so bad and he was expected to go completely blind shortly, tried it and saved his eyesight. He wrote a book called, I believe, The Art of Seeing. I tried the method for awhile, and it did begin to change my vision -- but I would have had to go through a series of glasses as my vision changed, and I was too poor...and lazy. It requires effort. I would recommend it especially to people who have not as yet needed glasses, and therefore would not have to go through a lot of glasses as one's vision improved.

Our saftey and health rep at the plant teaches all of us that work at VDTs more than 2 hours per day a series of optic excercises to minimize eyestrain. The main ones are keep the monitor at least 20 to 30 inches from your eyes and shift your gaze from the screen every minute or so. Check your windows guide, it should have a listing showing some of these preventative measures.
