Lets play the "time capsule" game (reflections , misc )

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We all know what time capsules are, so lets" make "a 21st century homesteaders time capsule here on the forum. Look around your place and pick not 1 (its to hard to pick 1 item and people tend to get to philosophical in their picking) instead pick 3 items to "put" in the capsule. The reason I think 3 is a good choice besause it gives us latitude to go the full spectrum from practical to frivolous, inside and out side the box. I don't even know what 3 things I am going to list yet, just got the idea for it. Remember, the only rule to this is pick 3 ( and keep our PG-13 rating).

Okay, after some thought, I would like to put a copy of the old farmers almanac, a print out of a countryside link page and a copy of a letter of resignation written on a bottle of blowing bubbles with double wand included.. Any others?

I'll put in a jar of my serendipity squash, a bag of my favrite "home grown" fertilizer (!) and a checkbook register, so the future world can see how little someone can really live on :)

a homesteaders time capsule. Hmmm. alright, a back-up of my hard drive, some homespun yarn, and my grandma's recipe, in her handwriting, for cabbage rolls.

A loaf of my mother-in-law's homemade whole wheat bread, home-churned butter, and a jar of Nanking cherry preserves

I would like to contribute my well-used copy of "The Soapmaker's Companion", along with a bar of chamomile soap, and a photograph of my dogs and cats. (C'mon guys, this time capsule needs some more stuff!) Jay, I really loved this idea.

I had to think about this one for a while. Let's add Carla Emery's Old Fashioned Recipe Book; some hand-dipped beeswax candles; and a goat-milking pail!

(But you can't have my Carla Emery book for the time capsule until I'm done with it -- and as I am only forty-three, and, if the Lord tarries, hope to live another fifty years or so, it will be a while before we can seal up that time capsule!! :-)

Kathleen, our homestead society and lifestyle is the capsule and it won't be sealed until we are all called home. C'mon , lets hear from some more before we ride "off into the archives".

A Murray McMurray Hatchery catalog, some seed catalogs, and vac-packed jar of heirloom seeds.

-- Polly (tigger@moultrie.com), August 18, 2000.

A note " In this capsule you shall find--gifts of friends from another time--Most were greedy, proud, and vain--We leave you our treasures that weren't part of our pain. We hope you've discovered the answers we missed--These are our treasures, though to late found--We hope yours is a world where love and laughter abound. Signed, The Generation Lost in Space

Pictures of home canned food and homestead tools, a list of things country folk do for fun, Hoot's stories. Good thread, Jay.

well you can have my copy of carlas book the print is to small to be enjoyable reading.a bottle of my favorite home made wine. and a picture of my motorcycle. they need to know how we got around after gas got out of hand. bob in s.e.ks.

-- Bob Condry (bobco@hit.net), August 22, 2000.

Wouldnt anyone else include a few copies of COUNTRYSIDE, showing how we successfully bridge the gap between the sidewalks and beyond the sidewalks... and hopefully, the gaps between the 20th, 21st and 22nd centuries?

Then, I have some jars of stuff in the root cellar that Im reluctant to toss out, because it might still be good and I might need it someday.(Anybody want some tomatillos?) Another hundred years couldnt hurt it much.

And third, a few receipts: for gas, groceries, land, almost anything. Lets make our descendents as amazed as we are when we hear about land for $5 an acre or gas for 21" a gallon, cigarettes for 20" a pack. Give them something to think about! Jd
