Guinea Hogs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have read about Guinea Hogs. These are small, black or red, I think, American hogs that pioneers raised. Good foragers and tasty, but small. Endangered. It's hard to find any information on them. I surfed for a while and found a person in California who had one for a pet. I thought they sounded like the ideal homestead hog. Does anyone have any more information?

I saw the title of your post and couldn't help but guess that your note was about Texas-sized guinea pigs ... those furry little pets with the tunnels in their cages!

Go to albc-usa.org it's the web site for American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. They have a listing for Guinea hogs. If you can't access it online you could write to them for info.

An excellent site for information on all livestock is Breeds of Livestock. If you go there, then follow through "swine" "Guinea" etc, you'll find a breed association.

Hey... I am the farm manager at Dodge Nature Center in St. Paul, MN. I have a breeding pair of guinea hogs. They are a small sized pigs and are good grazers. Very friendly and easy handlers.
