A Helpful Book for Small-Scale Livestock Farming

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I was just reading my Acres, U.S.A newspaper and they mentioned a new book entitled Small-Scale Livestock Farming - A Grass-Based Approach for Health, Sustainability & Profit by Carol Ekarius. They gave it excellent reviews and indicated that it included an overview of ecosystems and how livestock fit into them, she analyzed modesl for holistic management, explained how to design a production system that complements your liefestyle the area ecology and local rsources and production possibilities. It also profiles other successful farms and and the methods they use to make their system work and how they planned their system. It also talks about the complex facets of small-scale production. It talks about marketing and how to plan the operation. And finally, it has an appendix that covers info on feeds and how to figure how much each animal needs, the physical breakdown of grains and other common foodstuffs. They recommended that every farm entrepreneu have it. The price is $19 plus $3 shipping and you can call Acres, U.S.A. directly at 800-355-5313 to order.

I have nothing to do with the book or the newspaper but thought I would mention it for those who might be interested. I have not read the book myself so cannot provide input but maybe someone else on the list has.

Thanks for the info -- sounds interesting and I'm going to look into it. I am currently reading a book "Quality Pasture" by Allan Nation. Seems to be on some of the same issues. Perhaps they would be complimentary to each other. Mr. Nation is the editor of STOCKMAN GRASS FARMER. You can get a free sample of the newsletter and order the book from them by calling 1-800-748-9808. The book is also sold by Amazon if you want to check it out a little bit.

While we are plugging books... Gene Logsdon's the man... "Contrary Farmer"..."Living at Nature's pace", etc. etc. ...should be required reading to be considered a true small farmer, whether its on 1/2 acre or 200.
