I can't quite agree with you. I think there is important truth here but I also think it is oversimplified. Yes, it is futile to agonize over what has already happened or over what is yet to come. But who we are today, what we are today is the sum total of every moment of our yesterdays. The mathematical analogy is integation. Time element by time element we sum to what we are now. To forget yesterday is to live in permanent amnesia.

Likewise, to ignore the possibilities of tomorrow is to drift aimlessly. Sure we should not worry over the unknowable but we can extrapolate one day to another. To not make plans guarantees a squandered life.

If I may,

We have 3 different days,Yesterday,Today and Tomorrow.

If you simplify it totally,we all would wake up oblivious of yesterday and ignorant about tomorrow,exsisting soley on the basis of today with no past and no future,this is neither desireable nor logical.There HAS to be a beginning,a middle and an ending or there is not anything,such is the way of the universe.

The optimal resolution to this quandry is to take from yesterday all that is good and leave behind all that is bad,carry the good into today,hang onto it tightly while trying not to let the negative hang on to you as you try to make into tomorrow.

There is a happy medium between "over simplification" and "over philosophising",neither are practical.

CapnFun comes closest to what I truly believe. As far as the future, it is important to plan plans but not plan the results. Planning results can lead to expectation, which unfulfilled becomes resentment. Living with resentment is a poison. That is why the past needs to be left in the past-anger and resentment are products of the past. One should not forget the past completely, BUT bringing the past to every perception of the present will lead to seeing a more grossly filtered world. What I aim for is to exist totally in the present, where I can see things as they are intrinsically, and not some filtered version from what I believe the world was yesterday, or what it may be tomorrow.

This is contrary to the vast majority, I know this. While I see value in retrospection and plans, I make sure these two elements do not overwhelm my experience today. Did anyone see the last Star Trek movie?
