flower seeds?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

A friend gave me some seed. It is purple or pink cone flower. And holly hocks. When is the best time to plant this seed. I live in the southwestern part of central Arkansas. It's real hot now. Is it too late or maybe too early? Also is it too late for green beans and okra to be planted. What can I plant now? When do I start a fall garden and what can I safely plant here for a fall garden? Also I have some day lillies grown along a fence. I want to kill everything else on that fence. the flowers have died down for the year. Would it be ok to cut them off and spray around them or will the weed (actually brush killer) finish them off anyway> I really don't want to have to move these flowers if I don't have too. They do need to be divided though. When would be the best time to do that; without them burning up.Thanks

Here in North Texas we plant wildflower seeds in mid- October. Just clear the ground of weeds and stuff and scatter the seeds. Water them LIGHTLY FREQUENTLY (every couple of days) until they germinate, then forget about them until you see them next spring. Start your fall garden now. Of course that depends on what you plan to plant. I don't know about your other questions.

Bonnie, I live in NE Texas. It is too late for okra, and too early for green beans. You can plant squash now. Also fall tomato plants, if you can find them. Plant your beans in mid August. Same for fall Irish potatoes. English peas in mid September. Turnips in early September. You could plant field peas (purple hulls, blackeyes, etc.) now. If you have a specific list of vegetables to plant, send it to me and I will try to tell you the planting dates.

Don't spray herbicides around your day lilies. It will kill them dead as a hammer.
