Mother Earth Stove

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My husband was given a mother earth wood stove free for removing it from a home for a couple who didn't want wood heat. We have a terrible problem with the stove smoking up the house every time we open it to fix it. We have cleaned out the chimney several times and even added onto the chimney for better air flow. We have adjusted the damper to with no luck. Any suggestions so I can stop opening all the windows to fix the fire, any will be appreciated. By the way I just found this forum and love it so far Thanks

Cynthia, I am not sure what a Mother EarthWood Stove is but we once had a stove that was a bit of a hassle to get lit without a lot of smoke. We used to make a roll of newspaper, light it and hold it up to the chimney opening until we established a good draft. Once the stove began to draw we lit the paper under the logs. It helped a lot. Good luck. Enjoy your wood stove, there is nothing as nice as wood heat! Kim

Mother Earth is the trade name of the stove. It's suppose to be a very good stove and it heats very well. thanks for the input.

You need to warm the flue before building the fire, scrunch up a piece of newspaper and stuff it in the flue then light it. Then build the fire. If there is still a problem it could be an air flow problem caused by the height/location of the chimney compared to wind direction. You could consider modifying the chimney but first I would look into changing the cap to something like the finned elbow kind.
