Come on big Al, was he the first Pope,For the message here I desperately grope.
The diction is frantic,
The thoughts are so manic,
Your words are the ramblings of a burnt out dope.

no frank, i don,t find JESUS calling anyone pope. apostle, disciple, but pope?? peter never refered'to himself as pope.seems like he,d a known. who, comes as an angel of light-to decieve.?
-- al-d (dogs@zianet.com), May 16, 2000.
Al:This is one of the parts of the bible that seem pretty clear to me.
Matthew 16:18 - "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it."
It seems pretty clear that Jesus was telling Peter that he was the temporal leader of His church after He was gone. It also seems clear that He's saying that even the death of Peter won't end the church. It seems like Peter has a pretty good claim to being something like a pope and his successors do also.
-- Jim Cooke (JJCooke@yahoo.com), May 16, 2000.
Come on Jim, surely you recognize old schtick like this:".in the LAST-DAY,S there WILL BE many false christs."
"who, comes as an angel of light-to decieve.?"
{And you probably thought I was joking about the mosh-pit thing}.

Al,First, thanks to J. Cooke for posting and saving me the trouble of pulling the verse. Christ said he was founding a church, wouldn't *someone* have to lead it after He was gone?
From your post it seems like you think the *idea* of a pope is anti-Christian.

Jesus is the Christ, Jesus is the One Good Shephard - YES AND AMEN. And yet, as Jesus promised in Mt 16:18 - to make Peter the Rock and give him the authority to lead the Church on Earth. The One Good Shephard tells Peter in the Gospel of John 21:16-19 to be the Shephard of Jesus flock "feed my lambs..., tend my sheep..., feed my sheep" Who's flock? - ALL of Jesus' one flock. Who's authority? - Jesus'. Who is given the keys to exercise this authority on earth? - Peter, the rock. And who's authority does Peter exercise? - Jesus', Does scripture support this? Yes - Jesus himself prays for Peter in Lk 22:31-34 "Simon, Simon...I HAVE PRAYED FOR YOU that YOUR OWN FAITH may not fail; and once you have turned back, YOU MUST STRENGTHEN YOUR BRETHERN.al-d, the Reformation is over. Thankfully, we have ceased the scandalous actions of some unscrupulous Popes and no longer "sell" indulgences. All is well. Come on home. Rome and Christ's Church awaits.
Ubi Petros, ibi eclesiastes. (Latin spell check anyone??)
"Where Peter is...there is the Church...
al, can you point me to ANY writing of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ...centuries that show an interpretation of Scriptures by any early Christian that differs from that of the Catholic Church???
