many things are considered art.....among the more traditional examples are sculpture or painting.....but is photography art?....some say it is mere recording of other things that may be art......others say that it is an art form in itself.....if it is art, what makes one photo a family snap and another a work of art?......

In my opinion, photography can be art. And composition is the primary component. Of course, subject matter is very important! *s* But, like a painting, if a photograph evokes a strong emotion for me, then - that's art. A good photographer with a sensitive eye can create images that are very bit as compelling for me as any other form of art. It's a good question, Outcast.

Ahhh. so what is the definition of art? Hallmark card poetry isn't art, but some of the poems we post in the slam are... the note I got today excusing Susie for an orthodontist appointment isn't art... but a poignant one page story I read is... those snaps in my box of pictures isn't art.. precious to me cause they're my kids.. but not art. Joseph Karsh's portraits are. I think that the difference is in the audience you are aiming at. non-art is specific.. the note was pretty well meaningless to anyone but me.. the pictures aren't going to be as powerful to anyone but my family. but art has a more universal appeal. Just about anyone can be moved by a piece of art.
I suppose that means if the picture moves you, it's art.
