I am looking for seed for grain amaranth. Does anyone know of a source or does anyone have seed to share or trade?

Hi There, Johnny's Selected Seeds has some. Page 77 of the 2000 catalog. Or www.johnnyseeds.com They are in Albion Maine. Have delt with them for many years and have been quite satisfied. Have never tried growing amaranth, so if you get a chance at the end of the season to let us know how it went I'd be interested. Thank You Steve E.

I have been interested in growing amaranth also. But how do you use it? Do you grind it to flour and use just like wheat or do you treat it differently. Cook it? How? Would like to grow it but only if I know how to use it.

To use amaranth in bread, use about 50% wheat flour and 50% amaranth flour. You can pop it in oil like you do corn, and you can make a candy like treat with it mixed with honey. I don't know any recipies for its use except the flour substitution, my best guess would be to look in a cookbook. I have no idea which one would be good. Any one that covers lots of grains would probably have a few. By the way it tastes great in bread! Good luck with the search. Annette

Abundant Life Seed Co. in Port Townsend Washington has different kinds: Bolivia, Burgundy or Golden; Mercado or Multicolor, and Opopeo or Orange Giant or Poppling (from their catalog this year)> price is for 7000 seeds (approximately) and it's $4.00 a packet.

This is a good company. I have bought many interesting seeds from them and they would be a good supplier to Countryside folks. Big on organic growers and appreciate their seed growers!

email: (they say they check once a week): abundant@olypen.com phone: 360.385.5660 fax: 360.385.7455

p.s.

Abundant's mission statement (from their 2000 catalog):

"Abundant Life Seed Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the genetic diversity of plants. We adquire, preserve and distribute open-pollinated seeds, with emphasis on rare, heirloom vegetables, medicinal herbs, and Pacific Northwest natives. We also provide education on cultivation and seed saving".

Worth getting a catalog, I'd say!! Even if you don't live up in this corner of the contiguous US.

Carla Emory's book, "The Encyclopedia of Country Living" has a whole section on amaranth. How to grow, different varieties, and some recipes. Rodale also put out a booklet on amaranth in the 70's, but it is out of print and I have not been able to find a copy.
