Heirloom corn to share

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have seed for an heirloom corn that I received from an elderly gentleman in southwestern Oklahoma (the world's worst place to try growing corn!) He had been planting the same variety in the same garden from seed saved each year for 50+ years. He didn't know what the variety was. It is a creamy white, dent type corn with 12 rows of kernals. It was grown in sandy soil, but I am now trying to grow it in a tighter clay soil. If anyone is interested in receiving some of this seed and helping to keep an older open-pollinated variety alive, I have a bit left over that I will gladly share as long as supply lasts.

Absolutely, Judy! I am not into corn as my preferred crop, but I am a bit of a nut when it comes to saving old seed. My weakness is heirloom tomatoes, and I have many - and good folks on this site have asked for some! I will fill any requests as long as I can. But back to your corn seed. I suggest you contact Seed Saver's Exchange, a wonderful organization for saving heirloom seed, and a group that I am proud of being a member. E-mail to me directly for info, or I will post info at this site if you desire. Thanks for helping to save the open pollenated goodies rather than the big company hybrids! We "little folks" may conquer the oppressiveness of big gov't/industry after all! We just need to keep the threads of communication open! So far, this site is incredibly helpful in dispensing knowledge! Some of you may have already known most of this stuff, but I for one have been educated tremendously through the knowledge of all our friends who so generously help us. Thanks to Steve for the idea, and thanks to all who visit here for helping those of us who "need to know"! Good luck to all!
