What is best pasture for milking cows

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

After a lot of work cleaning up this farm the hay fields are responding and are producing sme good quality hay. However, the small pasture I use for our milker is very low quality with a lot of weeds. I cut it out of the woods , and it seems to be fertile enough but it needs seeded. Is there a seed mixture that is better for the needs of milking cows. The better the pasture, the better the cows will produce and the less grain they will need. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

A good mix of orchard grass and clover seems to keep our Jersey happy, and the milk rolling in. I also rotate grazing with my goats. They seem to prefer the weeds, and keep them from seeding and spreading. One pasture was never seeded at all, I just grazed the goats until they killed off the ironweed and goldenrod, and it is now covered in clover!
