Why were at least two threads that made fun of LadyLogic deleted yesterday? They contained no profanity.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

Looks like its tougher to restrain the hand of censorship than you thought huh OTFR?

Answers

What threads are you referring to? Is there a reason why you are unable to post to the many LL-bashing threads that already exist here? Are you familiar with the term "spam?"

-- (hmm@hmm.hmm), March 16, 2000.

hmmm LL has friends in high places

ps when i type friends it usually comes out as fiends, I suppose fiends would be in low subterranean places

My impression is that as time passes, the censorites' initial sense of victory is being replaced by the slow realization that they've eliminated nearly all the voices of reason, leaving nobody to attack. And for many of them, puerile attacks exhausted their repertoire. Efforts at straight disruption on this forum are met with frustratingly passive acceptance. A conundrum.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), March 16, 2000.

yeah just who is the "owner" of this forum, that shadowy figure with the power to delete, perhaps its a committee

PS I still think that y2kpro1 is a bloke

Why don't we create a Trolls/Bickering archive and put things there that might otherwise be deleted. That way no one could accuse the Sysop(s) of censoring, yet the rest of us would be spared from constantly having those types of threads shoved in our faces every time we try look at New Answers. Maybe leave the offending threads active for a short time so people can see them and decide whether or not to follow them further. Deleting multiple copies of the same message, or other types of obvious Spamming makes good sense, but even that could be put into a Spam Archive if that would make everyone happy. Is this a workable idea?

-- Flash (flash@flash.hq), March 16, 2000.

This is not fair. The main reason I come here is to read LL rants, LL flirtations, LL bashings and to sometimes contribute to LL harrassment--constructively of course. Carl Perkins just doesn't do it for me.

-- (nemesis@awol.com), March 16, 2000.

Is this a workable idea?

From what I've seen of the Greenspun software, not really. I believe that even if you try to shuttle something off to an "archive," it will still show up in the "New Answers" as long as people keep posting to it.

In reality, these bickering messages are rather few and far between. They show up at the top of the new answers because some people like them and therefore post to them. There's really only a few lines of them that are "in your face" at any given time, and it's very easy to scroll down a few lines and ignore/avoid them entirely. It also eliminates any need for sysop involvment to move stuff around.

what do you mean we paleface

translated the use of the word "we" implies that you have the tacit agreement of an unspecified number of people, perhaps a majority, it is an obvious ploy used by politicians that may or may not be true but you don't know, people change when given even a small amount of power (not into the Hulk) but into traffic warden types, even happens to sysops

i like the witty asides call 'em what you like, even trading insults when needs be, if they're up on the new answers menas they're active

So tell me nemesis,

What do you have against blue suede shoes?

-- flora (***@__._), March 16, 2000.

Count me in the majority who has better things to do than flame a single individual.

I agree with Hmm that multiple postings to flame her constitutes spamming.

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), March 16, 2000.

Or I could just start a second forum for bashings and trolling. If I'd remove anything from here, I'd repost it there.

Note Wazup that your threads were deleted before they had any replies to them. I'm not censoring, I'm janitoring.

-- OTFR (freespeech@yahoo.com), March 16, 2000.

Flora,

Carl Perkins, Carl Jenkins, they're all rock 'n roll to me. "Blue, Blue, Blue suede shoes" was one of my favorites. After all, I used to wear bluie suede shoes (with taps), blue suede belts, turn my shirt collar up, comb my DA, drive a 51 Merc with dual glass packs. A regular Fonze. Ah, those were the days.

wow,

Thanks, you guys.

OTFR, richard, hmm, and others...

When I really get down to the core issue, I guess what really bugs me is genuine spam attacks (which I would categorize as repetitive reposting for disruptive purposes) and those multiple line message headings that crowd other headings off the screen. Fortunately, these don't seem to be a big problem, so maybe it is best just to accept things as they are as the price to pay for uncensored access. That, plus all the colorful "characters" and opinions are what makes this forum a most interesting place.

I must admint that I often find some of the more thoughtful bickering in some of the "griping" threads to be enjoyable, and frequently look at them for morale purposes.

OTFR, your suggestion about possibly creating another forum for bashings and tolling makes good sense, but hopefully won't be necessary unless things get too abusive here. However, if you were to do so, there would probably be a lot of complaining about censorship here.

Since you are the list owner/facilitator, obviously you have the final say in what stays on the list. How about trying the "disruptive" archive category only for things that you deem truly disruptive, and see if that works better than total deletion?

LL deserves to be flamed every chance anyone gets to do it. Remember the relentless spams, foul mouth threads we had to endure for days and weeks? This board is not an uncensored board, face it!
