TREX for raised beds?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Has anyone had any experience with Trex lumber for frames for raised bed gardens? I have been told that this is made of recycled soda pop bottles and wood shavings, and that it is water resistant and does not deteriate in the weather? Any information out there? Thanks in advance.

Your info is pretty much on target. It is a mixture of recycled plastic and fillers. To my knowledge, it doesn't have any "pesticides" in it the way railroad ties or "treated" lumber does. Should be pretty inert for a raised bet, but be aware that it has far less strength than regular or pressure treated lumber. And I have only seen it in "5/4" thickness, which really means 1". You'll need more vertical supports than with other stuff.

Thanks a lot, I might try it then. I have found it in what is normally called a 2 X 6 as well as one by's. They weather to a nice grey shade and in actually a pretty deck, so I might try a raised bed. Thanks again.
