Span of Control/Self-Managed Teams : LUSENET : work teams : One Thread

Is anyone familiar with research or experience that indicates changing work groups to self-managed teams can increase the number of employees supervisors can supervise effectively? It seems the supervisors would have more time for more employees, but does it actually happen? Or are the supervisors/leaders so busy with their new responsibilities that cannot handle additional employees? Thanks.
