How do you digital camera in future

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Photography Singapore : One Thread

I like photography. But I am seeing alot of people using digital cameras and doing development and editing using thier computers. Where do you see the industry going? And what digital equipment would you recommend?

Thanks, JayW

I have been a low budget photo fanatic for many years - even had my own darkroom about 20 years ago. My work has me traveling extensively and about 3 years ago I bought my first digital camera. It was convenient but no match for my Minolta SLRs. This past summer I decided to upgrade and was going to enter into the 35 mm autofocus world but after extensive research I decided that I had too many manual focus lenses to justify going the autofocus route. So I bought a Nikon CoolPix 950. It is one of the few 2+ megapixel cameras that is shutter priority, aperture priority, TTL flash, and of course auto-program. It also takes macros from around 2 cm. This camera has REALLY change my perspective on digital cameras. For photos up to 11 x 14 you cannot tell if it is digital or a high quality 35 mm and memory is cheap compared to film. A moderate size 48 MB flash card gives me 96 1600x1200 pictures. Now instead of rationing film I take hundreds of photos and experiment in all sorts of ways. Instead of playing with filters I now play with software and the results can be phenomenal. I also dive and 35 mm underwater photography can really be a challenge. I have just purchased an Iklite underwater housing and TTL strobe and with one dive in the murky waters by Singapore I am already amazed with the results. On the down side I feel bad that micro-chips and software are replacing part of the art and technique of film photography but I no longer feel guilty. If I had to do it all over again I would do it.
