Breaking spy scandal in Washington

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

MSNBC just broke the story that a Russian Diplomat was arrested in DC today on espionage charges. A listening device was discovered in a secure state department conference room and the diplomat was caught monitoring the device. It is unclear at this time just how much of high level state dept and administration strategy was disclosed, along with the true nature of our military and dconomic Y2K status. This one is way bad folks.

It's too late to make any difference. Clinton's already sold us down the river to the Chinese.

Nikoli: This is typical repartee for what the Russians did a few days ago with one of our spies over there. It has happened many times before.

Why is this story breaking now folks? I thought we didn't want to panic. How could the press be so um irresponsible, with dumping this on us today, 12/08, 3 weeks to go?

Thanks Nik, -You save me alot of time digging through news clippings. I see by previous answers alot of folks don't see the picture inside the picture and what a day tomorrow brings. Thanks Again and remember to duck and cover

Russian Diplomat Arrested

Apprehended For Monitoring Bug Planted in State Department

By David Ruppe, ABCNEWS.com

W A S H I N G T O N, Dec. 8 Federal authorities have arrested a Russian diplomat caught monitoring a listening device planted in a sensitive area of the State Department, ABCNEWS has learned.

The diplomat was apprehended by FBI and State Department diplomatic security agents about a block from the State Department around noon today and has been turned over to the Russian Embassy for expulsion within 10 days, administration officials say.

The Russian, who has claimed diplomatic immunity, was caught using a listening device to monitor a bug planted within a high-level conference room, according to an administration source.

The diplomats activities were called illegal and clandestine.

A State Department official says investigators are analyzing what kind of information the diplomat may have obtained.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing and sources say other Russian diplomats are under suspicion. U.S. authorities had been investigating the diplomats activities for some time. But they say they are not sure how long the bug was planted...

"has been turned over to the Russian Embassy for expulsion within 10 days"

Expulsion? Sheesh, what a wasted opportunity! They should pump him up with sodium pentathol, get everything they can out of him, and then slit his throat.

But Hawk, I thought you loved our Russian friends...

-- Nabi (nabi7@yahoo.com), December 09, 1999.

Eatshit Nabi, I don't love spies, but that doesn't mean I should hate ALL Russians. Aren't you supposed to be hiding in your bunker right now?

Hi Nikoli Krushev.
I'd just like to comment on observations I've made both here and on The Government of the United States forum. I have always appreciated your contributions, but I think the Cold War must have hit you at a time in your life such that it causes inevitable nuclear exchange with Russia to dominate your every thought. Don't get me wrong -- I agree that we're in a heap of glowing trouble in the not too distant future thanks to America's tendency to colonize, among other things, but I'd personally feel better if I knew you could breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the time you have on this planet. (I'm not joking.) So how about it? Can you afford at least a smile? (Yeah, I'm being presumptuous.)

Millenium,

That's what I've been thinking too. I feel sorry for the guy, and wish he could have some sweet dreams for a change. Look at it this way Nik, it's probably not as bad as you think, but even if it is, we'll be leaving these leaving these waterbags behind and graduating to the spiritual world, where things are waaaaay more cool! :-)

A year (or perhsps two) ago, a Top Secret briefing was taken from the a secretary's desk on the same floor as Albriht's office. It seems a man (unknown and never identified) simply walked up to the desk and picked it up. Then he just walked out of the building. This was reported in the press and was one of those three day 'storms' we have come to see so much of in the press of late. As far as I know, they never figured out who it was or where the documents went.

Albright has been asleep at the switch for a LONG time.

Hi Mil, I don't suppose i was raised any differently than anyone else of my generation. I went through elementary school watching Walter Cronkite give the daily body count every evening, watched the government assasinate JFK live on black and white tv, my dad had korean war combat trauma long before it was an acknowledged problem. My dad was also a superintendent for Bechtel, Pt Mcdermitt, Fluer, and Brown and Root building oil facilities all over the world during the sixties and 70's so I had access to a lot of stuff that never made the evening news. This work included recruitment by the CIA during his tenure with the Bechtel corp., during the period that George Bush and Al Haig were running that show. I didn't have any greater impact from the cold war than anyone else, just learned at an early age that there's a lot more going on than the general public is aware of, and that these unseen events have tremendous potential to impact our everyday lives. Case in point the administration of Ronald Reagan. The day he announced the cold war was over and we had won I told my best friend it was the death knell of the American worker. He couldn't understand what I meant then, nearly twenty years ago, but he understands full well now. I'm sure you understand what I mean.

Hawk you are undoubatdly one of the most ignorant people posting on this forum. I am genuinely awstruck at your unlimited and dogmatic stupidity. They say ignorance is bliss so I guess you must be the epitome of bucktooth grinning idiots worldwide. Your IQ is exceeded only by your shoe size amongst your litany of personal measurements. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but in your case we'll make an exception. I will take under advisement your assertion the Bill Clinton is secretly working to save us from the Red Peril, with the footnote that he has certainly managed to cover it up better than anything else he's done.

Nik, Hawk has been impossible to housebreak. But he's an equal- opportunity offender, gotta give him that. Everybody's fair game to him....

Sheeesh, Nik. That's some thanks I get for wishing you could have some sweet dreams! I don't know what is bothering you, but I sincerely hope you get better, and I mean that. Been nice not knowing you!
