Facts and sources, facts and sources...PLEASE.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm confused, and maybe you kind folks can unconfuse me.

Every day there are at least a dozen posts of anecdotal stories of milita signs in Walmart trucks, Costco clerks tackling customers, banks limiting funds, retirement homes with no preps started - all without names, sources or contact persons.

Now, when the establishment has a statement go out supporting their position, everyone doubts (wisely) that statement and demands sources, yet any doomer report seems to, (for the most part)go unchallenged.

Why does anyone go to the trouble to post a story without such support? It's so easy to say, for instance "My bank, (Bank of America)is limiting ATM withdrawals. Why leave out the names?

Okay, that's all. I'm not looking for a fight, there's no accusation intended, it's a serious question - I'm baffled.

Y2K Pro,

Kind 'o wierd me being in aggrement with you, huh?

I've mentioned this particular niglet a number of times and still never get an answer. I know if I was trying to get a message across, I'd naturally be listing the sources just to show that I wasn't full of cow-plop.

Without sources, it's just rumors or folklore.

Sometimes you have to read between the lines. Just like interviewing someone for a job, most of the information has to be inferred (since rarely do people explicitly "incriminate" themselves)with the negative information having more weight in the decision.

When I hear of some computer related failure I try to give details but still there always seems to be some "doubting Thomases" who needs to put their fingers into the bloody wounds!

randers,

you are correct in stating that many statements go unsubstantiated.

but the BIGGER picture - i mean MUCH BIGGER picture - in unsubstantiated reporting is what's being related by government and corporate, which is almost *totally* self-reported information. this is the truly scary thing about their y2k 'reporting'.

there are so few instances of iv&v being done on large systems, relative to the staggering number of self-reported y2k readiness, they are almost nonexistent.

sure doomers havent documented lots of stuff in this forum. but if you've been following the writings of ed yourdon or lane core jr, or jim lord, and many other expert y2k writers/reporters, for example, you'll see that nearly everything is sourced.

now are you starting to 'get it'?

What happened to Y2K Pro's response? He wasn't rude or flaming or anything - I don't get it.

Anyone?

Well said, Randers. I can't help but feel that many of the doomer stories are malicious or delusional. I've shared anecdotes, but I am careful to mark them as that, and I'm certainly taking other people's anecdotes with a pinch of salt. Just try to focus on those that ARE supported.

And, most importantly of all, CHECK THEM OUT YOURSELF.

Y2K,

Why you?

Is it your policical position, sarcasm, nasty language?

I'd E-mail you, but I'm guessing your address isn't correct.

Thanks

Which attacks hapened to be a rather blatant attempt at denial of service.

Randers do you see? The facists that run this forum will tell any lie in order to delete the ideas of those they disagree with. When it comes to Y2K, balance what you read here with other sites, for this place has only ONE point of View...

Randers, your post reminds of the spin we get from the government and other sources such as the media. There's either more to the story than we are being told, or the facts of the story are stretched a bit to get you to read more into it than what is really there. It does not matter to me anymore whether the bank down the road has cash or is limiting cash withdrawls, or the store down the road has been completely wiped out. What matters is when I see or hear about the mobs burning buildings, killing people and looting, then it's lock and load time. And for sure you will hear or witness it for yourself. With any forum such as this one, your going to hear all sorts of stuff. Some of it may be true but again what are the facts? It helps to post details to back up your story so it can be easily verified. But really, so what if the Bank of America ATM on the corner of 5th and Broadway is out of cash or not working? So what is Joe Blow Bank is only handing out $50 dollar bills? So what if there are 10 semi-truck trailers parked at WalMart, if it were top secret stuff it certainly wouldn't be parked at WalMart. I don't believe everything I read and I try to dig deeper to find out more about what's being reported. Someone recently posted something about seeing white buses everywhere and they were certain it had something to do with concentration camps and the UN. Well that was somewhere back east, and I'm in California. I see white buses all the time, but they are carrying students to college or kids to Sunday school. These stories don't really mean anything to me except for when they come and knock on my door and order to me GET ON THE BIG WHITE BUS.
