What happens if the gov't comes on TV Dec 28 and outlines a curfew that begins Dec 30th?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Supposing Klinton has a much advertized Fireside Chat re y2k and clearly explains to the public that because we DON'T KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN, THAT WE SHOULD ALL STAY IN OUR SAFE HOMES. That all businesses will be ASKED to close their doors and send their people home before 4pm on the 30th. That anyone not engaged in public service, such as roads, communications, NG,Emergency services, hospitals, computer geeks at work for rollover, etc be off the streets and in your house/apt. Lenghth of curfew will be dependent upon what happens during roll over. I think that this may be the scenario that plays out rather than starting off with martial law. This way the banks HAVE to close...("not our falut, we were compliant, folks".)I would like to hear some discussion on this scenario. Not having given it a lot of thought, off the top of my head, I think it might be a good idea.

Supposing Klinton has a much advertized Fireside Chat next week and tells us that there have been aliens here for decades and we are turning the world over to them? Suppose everyone decides to quit their jobs because they want to go back to school and learn to be web site creaters because e-commerce is the way to go? Suppose no one wants turkey for Christmas and the Turkeys over breed and take over the world? Suppose suppose suppose..... you sound like a 9 year old? Suppose the sun gets to close to the earth, Mommy? Suppose it rains candy Mommy? Geeze.....

Suppose you get a brain and learn to think instead of "speculate"?

LOL...

Now that would be one sure way to start the ball rolling...Got Second Chance Kevlar vests?

Getting the shovel out and digging the buker a little deeper...What if you are right!

Dec 31 is already a Federal Holiday. The Govt will be off except for essential personnel. I personally plan on cowering in fear all day.

Speculation? What are we left with when we feel that we are being spun? Clinton is to speak that evening.. Seems like a perfect time to say something like " darn y2k! I'm informed that some very un- expected problems have arisen that simply could not be forseen, So, for everyones safety we must insist that you stay indoors for the next few days until we can get all services in place...Gosh! ha ha we certainly didn't expect this'did we?"

Just wondering about all the people who have paid a lot of money for New Year's parties. Big Gov usually doesn't like to restrain trade in any way...money making is sacred.

If your scenario did happen, I think there would definitely be a big rush on the grocery store, just as there is when a hurricane is imminent.

I've heard rumblings via email that ( a neighbor of the poster) who is in the FBI said FBI has been told that Dec. 27 martial law is scheduled to be declared. This I cannot verify, but found interesting since my source is a former cop and is a level headed person.

To forestall further obnoxious flaming on this thread, I will say that this has to be classified as a rumor.

I guess I just wish they would tell people SOMETHING. The thing about the movie last night, there was no sign that anyone except one kook had prepared. No sign that people knew anything about storing food.

seraphima, Dec 27 is what we've been told also. They are still playing it by ear ...

Taz,

I lived in LA when they had the curfew. Basically it didn't rattle anyones cages that I am aware of. It WAS a bit eerie driving about 15 minuites before curfew as there wasn't ANYONE out. LA looked like a ghost town. I suspect most people will go "oh ok" and obey. (Oh but the day of the first riot the grocery stores were mobbed with people buying food).

Riiiiiiight, Cherry, "speculation" is reserved to the government.

Ours is not to question why, ours is but to do or die.

No way it will go down like that.

The only thing you can count on, if it did happen, is NO WARNING! That's just the way they work. No way we will get 2-3 days to stew over it.

Speculation:

Suppose Cherri learns to play nice? Hmmmm miracles DO happen....

Hitler ordered his generals to slowly increase oppression over time to more efficiently break a poulace with a minimum of casulties. It usualy starts with a curfew then a weapons grab.

Wait a minute...wait a minute. Doesn't Clinton have some kind of super-duper NYEve festivity planned on the mall in D.C.?
