Y2k Movie shown in Atlanta

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I caught the last 45mins or so of the tv show. while it was poorly-written and badly-crafted, the local governmental response and the news report was not. Atlanta's city gov't set up a telephone # which purpose was to alleviate citizens' fears of the movie's realism. the persons manning the phones were available until 12am. moreover, the news story following the movie highlighted water filters and water purification tablets in it's visual segments, and the people were advised to prepare for possible disturbances (of up to 5 days) in electricity and other utilities. the interesting things is that in the u.s. navy's city report (leaked by jim lord), atlanta's failures are expected in the areas of WATER and SEWAGE.

the truth is out there, and it's coming to a neighborhood near you!

I'm in SoCA. There wasn't any Mayor breaking in for a fireside chat or phone numbers running at the bottom of the screen. There was however a commercial from TacoBell showing the new taco. I guess while watching a Hollywood version of grcoery stores stripped and closed we were to become very hungry. McD's had its frY2k commercial. There was a glimpse of the normal news to follow at 11 p.m., and the only "Y2K chat" I could see were reporters asking supposed People On The Streets if they were worried, and a guy replied, "Yeah, I'm really worried about the banks!" I didn't watch it. I give up when the People On The Street aren't worried about FOOD and WATER.

We had a news cast right after the movie, and they basically said that the major utilities all say we are good to go with no foreseeable problems. They did add however, say that the National Guard will be ready to "Storm the Strip" (their words) if things get out of control.

The latest estimate on the number of people coming to Vegas for New years is 700,000. I think there will be more, just because I personally know of 7 people that are coming down here and not booking hotel rooms. They can't be the only 7 people coming to Vegas unannounced. Im betting that tons of people will decide at the last minute to drive here from LA (we get tons of LA visitors every weekend).

A man I worked with named Doug was down here with his family last year. He decided to take them down to the strip for the midnight hour. Things were so crazy down there, he had to shield his wife and child with his body, and use his huge arms (hes a body builder) to shove people out of the way to make an escape. He was 3 streets away from the strip!! Wacky! You couldnt pay me to be in a place like that or Times Square.

Also, they are posting a 6PM curfew on the under 18 crowd this year too. 6pm was the last time I heard, but it might have changed.

I actually did not watch the movie, but I did catch the more important 11pm news in DC. They actually recommended Gary North's site as one to check out and are providing links on their web site: www.nbc4.com. Just couldn't believe it myself.

Recommending Gary's site? - to newbies?

Whoa - that's a bit steep isn't it?

Oh well, might as well get them "interested" right off the bat!

Here's an Atlanta newspaper article from September recommending two weeks worth of preps:
