Please, please help with a few definations

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I have been "lurking" at this forum for several months and have learned a lot about Y2K. I AM a GI who has been preparing since February. I can't BELIEVE some of the nonsense that goes on here at times, and I have unraveled the definations of a great many words.

Troll, however, and Flame have me stumped. Just when I think I have it nailed down someone uses it in a way that is different than my assumption. Can I have some translations to help me follow the dialog? Thank you.

Ditto. What is a Troll?

TROLL: is a reference to both the ugly fantasy creature that lurks under bridges and grabs unwary passersby (well, I think so), it also can be traced to the sport of FISHING, (if you can call it a sport) when you just drop your line with a bunch of hooks on it in the water and drag it along, "trolling" for fish. You just wait and see how many you can snag.

The advice of "DON'T RESPOND TO THE TROLLS" means, don't respond to the post because the poster is just trying to get people stirred up for no other reason than sport. FLAME refers to verbal (well, typewritten) arguements or "Flame Wars". Invariably in a discussion, someone says something that riles others and starts an arguement. Some arguements can be quite spectacular. Some people will post something that they think "may" be controversial and expect to be shot down, hence, they deliver their post and then say: "Go Ahead And Flame Away"

Now I just made all this up from memory, but there are several places that have possibly more eloquent definitions but I don't feel like looking them up at the moment.

Perhaps someone else will chime in and either add or subtract from my response....Go ahead..FLAME AWAY! ;^)

A troll is a mean spirited little gnome with a fat behind and a miner's pick who lives underground. Trolls make it miserable for normal earthlings by initiating meaningless arguments. They can usually be found around Pollys.

Pollys are immune to solid evidence and obscure known fact by attacking those who present views in opposition their own.

Both avoid any rational debate and both are plagues on humanity that cannot be reached by reason.

Plonk,

Allow me to make one correction to your explanation. Trolling, in the fishing sense, involves dragging a lure, not just hooks. Snagging is illegal in most states, so far as I know.

The lure, of course, entices the fish (or the reader) to go for it.

Oddly enough, there are persons who spend a great deal of time composing trolls and frequent various sites for the express purpose of starting a flame war. They consider it a great success if they can succeed in shutting down a site.

Hence the wisdom of not "feeding the trolls."

regards,

gene

thanks gene, you explained "trolling" (both for fishing AND for discussion groups) far better than I could.

now if you could just turn off the BOLD for me...........

Bold off.

Thanks, that helps. To clarify, feeding the Trolls has the same results as feeding the pigeons (right?)

Jenny, a quick search in the archived threads and you would have found these (and a lot more):

Definition of a troll

Feeding trolls (circa Dec. 1998)

Let's talk about TROLLS (Chicken Little recently questioned the meaning of self)

Glossary question: What's a schill? What's a troll? (and other terms)

While we are at it, what does BITR mean?

-- JoseMiami (caris@prodigy.net), November 16, 1999.

Jose,

BITR is 'bump in the road.' In other words, Y2K will have minor effect versus TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it).

KOS said: ... I'll loot the royal treasury!!!

I think that was a type, he ment:

I'll root the loyal peasantry!!!

-- Greybear (greybear@home.com), November 17, 1999.

Or was it:

"I'll goose the loyal podiatry!"

--- just to stick it to the loyal foot solders out there....you know, the guys who go around welding feet back together into meters and centimeters..

--

Notes on trolling: 'tis said the only way to hook a big East Texas alligator gar is to drag a hook past him and snag his tail....'cause there too lazy to open up and eat the bait.
