What are any of the cities doing about their garbage

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I have not heard a word about Garbage disposal being a problem at the roll over. This seems odd, because surely the garbage trucks may have a problem picking up the garbage and delivering it to the garbage site. I live in the country and would bury my garbage in a good deep hole, but this is impossible in most city dwellings such as apartment complexes ect. If no one has considered contingency actions maybe they should even at this late date.

The planned community I am in has its own wee dump and incinerator that it can use as a contingency plan. It operates with electric golf carts, has its own lake, gigantic swimming pool, its own septic tank system, wells, mini dump, and is right across the street from some dairies. Oh and it also has a sotrage facility for RV's which includes a drop for waste products. And some posters knocked the ole "trailer parks!"

A 55-gal steel drum ought to do the trick if you have a house. But if your in an apartment or condo...big problem. Maybe set the dumpster on fire and burn the trash if there's no garbage pickup.

Paula,

Sounds like a great lifestyle. Ah, a swimming pool. We have the beach near us and a shovel. Don't want to have to do it, but we will...

Takes power to pump the water, and it takes a pumping truck to pick up the RV waste. It takes power to filter the swimming pool, plus chemicals. It takes power to charge the batteries for the golf carts. No feed for the cows at the dairy and no power to milk them....well you can imagine the smell and flies eating the dead carcasses. Yeh, it's great living at the "ole trailer park."

My husband is a supervisor at a land fill. When he has tried to ask TPTB about Y2k he gets laffed at. When he had asked specific questions re how much diesel that is stored for trucks, cats, compactors, pans, etc he never gets an answer. When we asked the County Administrator in person, he got angry and said there were no problems with y2k. When I asked him to be more explicit, he said, "you will just have to believe me because I am telling you". At least Kosky's got a little class!!

Yes, the garbage standing around will attrack rats. What do rats carry? A whole community could be wiped out with disease. It is very odd that nobody seems to care about this.

Flies!

Garbage attracks flies. Coming up hiway 4, CA, the other day my drivers side window exploded. I stopped to clean the glass off me and out of the truck. I was close to a turkey farm and within seconds was swarmed by flies. If you want to go nuts try living with swarms of flies.

Look into sanitation. Form it up so that you can inform others about you to keep it clean. You may have to choose between a little smelly smoke and disease bearing insects.

Yet another reason to NOT live in the city. Have never seen a garbage truck up here, recycle what we can, burn some, compost food and humanure. End up with little trash but make a quarterly dump run (which with 35 acres could be put off for a while). Have water from springs and solar energy courtesy of the sun, Siemens and Southwest Windpower. Should survive quite nicely here but believe most cities will be fine.

Dead carcasses and rotting flesh = maggots = millions and zillions of flies = disease = more deaths = more flies, the plague.

Garbage Disposal

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), November 15, 1999.

Sanitation problems can come in several forms. Rats will flood us, so have lots of rat poison. Have a way to protect your food from rodents - glass jars, metal trash cans with lids. Be prepared for pets running wild, living off garbage. Dogs in particular will live this way, gang up and become VERY dangerous. Have a weapon suitable for killing wild dogs, and don't hesitate to use it on strange ones. They are fast and very smart. Flies and other bugs will grow on garbage, carrying disease. Be prepared to screen them, when you have open windows (because your AC won't work because the power is off ...).

Get lime for waste disposal, have a shovel to dig a pit, have large garbage bags, etc.
