Can anyone provide me with a URL for the Senate 100 day report?

-- Laura in Phoenix (Ladylogic46@aol.com), November 13, 1999

Answers

You're not stupid Laura.

The Senate report can be found on the Senate Y2K Committee site, here:

http:// www.senate.gov/~y2k/documents/100dayrpt/

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it, which if you don't have already, you can down load from here:

http:// www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

(It's prpbably a good idea to have and install this software, as it seems that the kinds of things that are really important, you know, the stuff that they don't want people to have easy access to, are in Acrobat format.)

Also, a regular on the forum was kind enough to convert most of the report to HTML, which you can find links to each section here:

Senate Report in HTML.

Laura, nobody who looks for information should consider themselves stupid. Behind the curve, maybe, but use that Ladylogic of yours, and you'll catch up. Welcome to the forum. Don't be scared off by the nasties.

Laura...sounds like you will fit right in here. LOL Go to the bottom of the forum and you will find the archives. Go down the list to government and scroll down. I am sure its there. Good luck.

Would you actually believe the gov?
Spend some time reading the posts here. You have 40 some days till y2k.
There's a good possibility that after the y2k movie airs on the 21st, that the herd will start moving more rapidly.
Start prepping now, it's too late to start trying to understand all the ramifications of y2k.

Laura, did you attend your meeting with the oil folks? What companies were represented? Or if you haven't gone yet, who is giving the speech?

-- Gordon (g_gecko_69@hotmail.com), November 13, 1999.

Not at all stupid - simply wise enough to ask for information about a confusing, complicated subject - that itself has has many sides and implications.

I congratulate your wisdom.

-- Robert A. Cook, PE (Marietta, GA) (cook.r@csaatl.com), November 13, 1999.

Laura, It sounds like you're new here because you just GI or "Got It". If so, I'd be interested in knowing what event or piece of info pushed you, at this late date, to begin preparing. Do you, as the above answer implies, have connections in the oil industry? Inquiring minds want to know.

-- Ralph Kramden (and@awaywego.com), November 13, 1999.

Welcome, Laura.

You found us just in time. Stupid are those who think they don't need the information. Pull up a chair and watch history unfold.

Do you good people have any questions I can ask the Public Relations Vice-President of a national chain of convenience stores regarding petroleum? (See my response to Gordon)

Helping Hand,

Wow, thanks for the quick response Helping Hand. I cant wait to dig into that report. (Particularly the Utilities section.) I have a lot of studying to do before the meeting on the 17th.

>>>Don't be scared off by the nasties.<<<

Thanks for the heads-up Dear Heart! Fortunately, I can take care of myself. Im tougher than a teamster and more beautiful than Cindy Crawford. I can handle anybody.

Taz,

>>>Go to the bottom of the forum and you will find the archives. <<< Thank you, Taz! It looks like there is a world of information down there. I never would have thought to look way down there. Thanks for sending me there.

Rainman,

>>>Start prepping now, it's too late to start trying to understand all the ramifications of y2k. <<<

Ive been prepping for a year now - actual prepping. I just havent done any emperical research until now.

>>>"I did not have sexual relations- with that woman" <<< Are you feeling guilty?

Diane J. Squire,

Your post took my breathe away. I can tell you are a hard-working, responsible, mature, woman with a HUGE heart. It is a pleasure to meet you.

Gordon,

>>>Laura, did you attend your meeting with the oil folks? What companies were represented? Or if you haven't gone yet, who is giving the speech? <<<

The meeting isnt with an oil company, it is with a Millennium Group. I own a teeny, tiny seminar business, that produces preparedness courses for the locals. I have been invited to attend a meeting next week in which the Public Relations Vice-President of one of the largest national convenience store chains will be presenting. He will be discussing how they plan to cover the IT systems, field systems and contingency planning for providing oil to their stores in Arizona. I'm not a programmer, I don't work in the petroleum industry, I'm just a simple seminar business owner who has the opportunity to ask anything I want - in a public forum! I need a lot of education - fast! I have already e-mailed him a copy of DD1st Lights discussion with Greg Canton, and told him I would like him to address my questions. He thanked me for the heads-up, and said hell be prepared to answer my questions. I have a LOT of studying to do before then!

Robert,

>>>I congratulate your wisdom.<<<

Thank you Robert, but I dont know how wise this is. I may get to that meeting and make a complete a$$ of myself. Doesnt matter, Ive been stupid before and it hasnt killed me yet. Its really nice to have encouragement from kind people like you though. You just made me think of a saying that Ive lived by: All information is usefulit just depends on how you apply it. Im hoping for wisdom to accompany all the information Im about to read. Y2K is extremely important to me, and I consider the opportunity to attend this meeting a responsibility. I think I will be the only one there without a vested interest. Fortunately, I have reverence for objective thought, and my questions will be presented accordingly.

Thank you very much - everybody! It is an honor and a privilege to meet you.

Laura

Laura, there is a very odd "process" (both intellectually and emotionally) many go through in trying to decide to prepare. Then there is the dynamic of trying to get the support of loved ones, which often is difficult. These things take a LOT of TIME, and can derail the prep process. I believe that might be important to realize and keep aware of.

Since time is short, you might want to consider stepping over the need for an abundance of convincing information. Y2K is absolutely mired in ambiguity. It's difficult to achieve certitude about the outcomes. Simply put -- because nobody knows, and as I'm sure you realize, it's all conflicting information. So the decision, of course, is whether you buy insurance for an event that has the potential for impact. Cool part is, it's insurance you can use later, with or without disruptions.

You might want to consider prepping quietly if your loved ones don't share the view that there is a need. Just keep focused and I hope you don't allow this issue to become disruptive in your loving relationships. It's possible to prep alone, and is often a good choice out of respect for family members who disagree with your assessment of the need. Keep the love between you and yours, strong, healthy, and intact. You can find a lot of moral support on this forum.

Stan Farnya, Rob Michaels, Big Dog and many others have done an award- winning job helping people keep focused on preps. I recommend reading everything Stan posts, and following all his links.

I hope I have not been presumptuous in giving advice; I'm out of context since I don't know your circumstances.

May your focus be unflinching at this point if you decide it's worth preparing, and my very best wishes to you.

-- (resigned@this.point), November 13, 1999.

Ooops, Laura. Your response post was not up when I wrote mine. Having read your follow-up post moments ago, I now realize you understand much about preparing. Please forgive my presumptuousness. (I really meant well.)

-- (resigned@this.point), November 13, 1999.

Laura,

You're not stupid - anyone on this forum who shows you disrespect is stating more about themselves than you.

I encourage all people new to the debate to try and assimilate all of the information - on both sides of the argument - and see where that leads you. It is highly likley that such a search will lead to a somewhat moderate opinion. Whatever the results, you should (as everyone should) prepare to whatever level grants them security. For me personally, that means doing nothing out of the ordinary. For you, it may mean a lot of work.

I encourage you to read New to the forum?..., and article I posted earlier.

Patient Regards,
Andy Ray

Hi Laura:

The best advice I can give you about your food preps is:

*Don't buy any type of food you haven't eaten before.

*Have at least one back-up can opener.

*Allow water for the dried food.

*Greg Caton's Lumen Foods has probably the best meat-replacer products and I've been ordering from there since way before y2K.

*For welcome "comfort" additions (like powdered butter and dehydrated cheese--both VERY good and available in quantities as small as 4 ozs), adventurefoods.com.

Will be looking forward to your report about the meeting.

Laura --

Wouldn't say it is stupid. We are all of us, technical types as well as the others, working from grossly inadequate data. All any of us can do is to obtain all of the input we can get, sort it out for believability, accuracy, whether it is contradicted by other data, and make our own assessment of the reliability of that data, and make decisions based on our evaluation of it.

Other places you might want to look, (sorry if they duplicate what others put in already):

www.garynorth.com (over 6000 links to Y2K related articles. Feel free to ignore the commentary and editorializing and just look at the information).

2000.jbaworld.com (Rating the embedded chip problem)

www.cassandraproject.com (The Cassandra Project, an excellent source for 'community preparation.)

www.wgn.com (The Westergaard Y2000 page.)

Hope you will hang on and contribute.

May I contact you if I have any questions regarding the credibility of a source?

Laura --

Feel free to request it. I look at most of the technical posts on here when I have time. I don't give out my email, as there are a number of *very* obnoxious trolls on here who might well use it in a detrimental fashion. (I work in the industry, am gainfully employed at a reasonably high rate, would like to keep working in the industry, and have had to, over the years, sign a whole lot of 'yellow dog contracts', non-disclosure and non-compete agreements, security clearances, etc., which would preclude me from even posting here, as a quick look at my resume would allow one to identify some of the companies, and indeed, several applications as being 'at risk', which I am contractually obliged not to do.)

But you can post an answer to a question asking my opinion and I'll get to it as soon as I see it.

BTW, thanks for the compliment, but just another engineer is exactly what I am. No claims of special knowledge, everything I post here is common knowledge, albeit within the particular industry. No claims of a 'crystal ball', which is why I don't make predictions. Nothing in particular except a willingness to look at things and try to sort out fact from opinion, data from wishful thinking, reality from fiction.
