WASHINGTON (AP) - Although President Clinton is reassuring Americans he expects no computer failures from the Year 2000 problem, the main Internet site for the White House displays an unusual message when visitors search for information about Y2K.

Instead of listing documents on the Web site, at www.whitehouse.gov, that include the term ``Y2K,'' the site's so-called ``virtual library'' unexpectedly asks visitors to enter a user name and password combination. Searching for other topics works just fine.

A White House spokesman today couldn't immediately explain the unusual behavior, but suggested that visitors use a different page to search for information from the president about Y2K, at http://www.pub.whitehouse.gov/search/everything.html.

The president's top experts on his Council for Year 2000 Conversion issued their final report Wednesday on the nation's readiness, and Clinton predicted there will be no national breakdowns because of the New Year's date rollover.

``The American people can have full faith that everything from air traffic control systems to Social Security payment systems will work like they should,'' Clinton said.

He didn't mention his own Internet site.

Answers

I did a Y2K search in the virtual library this morning and was not prompted for a password. My search resulted in 51 hits.

I did received a "Connection Refused" during my first attempt. Will try again.

Here's the deal. There are several different search options. I have been choosing the second link, entering Y2K, and been receiving the documents.

The first option, search entire site (www.whitehouse.gov), does indeed prompt you for a password if you enter "Y2K" in the search criteria, but doesn't require one for other entries.

If, however, you key in "Year 2000 computer", you will receive 40 documents to review.

Go figure...

Search on y2* and you get back 104 documents.

I have heard tell that a single document is listed in an access file and that is causing the password request.
