Where did all this compassion spring from?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Something that has just struck me is the conspicuous amount of compassion and goodwill shown in this forum. Granted that most contributors have a common interest, but I'm still touched by the many heartfelt expressions of solidarity and sympathy that appear here. I'm not claiming that it's all sweetness and light, but it's certainly far removed from the morass of bile and spite that usenet has become and that chat rooms are rapidly degenerating into.

While I don't really buy into a doomer scenario, I almost hope that we DO suffer a major crunch and (sorry) subsequent dieback, because it seems to me that the survivors (you lot) are generally a decent and caring bunch of people. If things do go pear shaped and you do make it through, just remember to look up the suits who let things slip this far, because you can bet THEY'LL thrive. Chant the mantra: jean legs good, twill legs bad. ;)

Colin,

Interesting comment. This might sound corny but I'm a genealogist and have traced my family back to almost 1400 in France. I have almost 12,000 names in my family history. A few months ago I discovered a relative living two blocks from me. His grandfather and my grandmother were brother and sister. I couldn't believe what a small world it is.

Somewhere, somehow we are all related. Keep that in mind the next time you post something nasty. Don't get too mushy, though. Half the fun of Yourdon's site is the debate between the trolls and doomers.

Troll Alert. This guy can't be serious.

Funny. That's exactly what I tell myself everytime I see anything posted by "Butt Nugget".

yikes.

Grave hunter,

Genealogy is fascinating, isn't it? It IS a small world.

We've traced one of my ancestral lines back to the 1600's in Germany. One of the things we found was confirmation of a direct line to one of our country's founding fathers; someone who was a 'first' in our nation's history. Very interesting, somewhat humbling when one stops to consider the personal sacrifice this person made. Made me very proud to be 'connected' to this individual.

Then one day, totally out of the blue, I was cruising the website of a very staunch, almost militant polly (does not post on this forum that I am aware of, yet is very adamant in their views). Imagine my surprise and almost disbelief (borderline disgust)to find that that particular person can also claim a line to "my" ancestor. How can that happen? How could I possibly be related to that individual? It's not only possible, it's probable. We *are* connected with others, in ways we would all probably find quite surprising, if not by bloodlines, then by virtue of other relationships we've formed.

Good idea Chris. Here's my contribution:

Doc Paulie claims that Andy Ray's [snip--Sysop] is larger than CPR's, Stephen Poole's or Bill Clinton's. Of course, it's difficult to take a person who wears a bib seriously.

Colin,

*Most* here (not all) ARE compassionate.

And only a smaller percentage of regular posters are actual "doomers," as perhaps defined, by one measure, as a "7" and above on the D.C. group scale. If you defined a "doomer" by how many months of preparation, then someone like Flint is way out front with a year's worth.

It's all in a definition.

But when push comes to shove, this group (minus trolls) HAS shown a tremendous amount of heart and caring.

Diane, NOT a "doomer" by definition or inclination

;-D

There is an expression:

"birds of a feather flock together"

It actually has some physics behind it. Corresponding energy ,like attracts like etc.

If you flew an airplane over the U.S. at night and looked down, if all of the neighborhoods were color coded according to their socio- economic level etc. it would be a real eye opener.

Lately the forum has developed a much more spiritual, compassionate feel to it. Must be an intuitive realization as to where we are headed.

Wilferd,

Nice to see another genealogist!

I tried to trace back but there are untalked-about Victorian scandals on both sides of my family and I can't get past great-grandparents!

No one knows what this is really going to be. One can hope to be a decent human being but one will have to watch ones local situation very carefully. One may not be able to go knock on the elderlies door if 100 hungry and desperate people from another state are all parked on ones street in a "panic," because 4000 miles away a nuclear plant blew and they live by a nuclear plant.

After reading what has happened on this forum today, maybe we should reconsider the compassion and goodwill.
