This open letter did not actually expand upon what we, at this forum, already know. They did not provide any solid evidence that anything good or bad will happen, it is just opinion. They carry as much weight in their profession as you or I do when we consider the potential impact of computers at our own work site.

They seem to suggest that many small and medium business can't function "period" without a computer. Do we really need that many graffic designers anyway? There are many business which will just slow down. The impact of the increase in productivity of the American society over the past 4 years is a testiment to the use of this new technology, but is it the end to all production? I do not think so and neither do "all" of the doomers on this board.

People here have started to take control of their lives. After the change over, on January 3 2000, many of the people, who we work with, will return back to work and pick up the pieces, just like after any disaster. They will return to work because they have to. There is no where to go. A vast majority of the US population must work in order to survive because, like or not, they still live from paycheck to paycheck.

On January 3, 2000 I will go to work, just like last year. I should probably take second can of Chef-boyardee(a spoon, and non-electric can opener). What are you going to do, just sit on your wood stove(kerosene or propane heater), wondering whether your pyrex cookware can be heated by anything other than a microwave?

"Concerned IT Managers"

Hahahahahahahahaha

Stop it, you're killing me.

Many of the people who signed that letter wouldn't know a Y2K project from a housing project.

Ned --

I plan on going to work Jan 3, 2000 also if:

I'm sure this list is incomplete, but you get the message. Then I will think about showing up for work. If I see any serious trouble, I will not go to work.

brain dead

Glad to know that you have done so much research on these folks. Talked with them, met with their co-workers, checked out their resumes. I'm sure Mr.Greenspan could use you on his staff. Why are you wasting your time here?

-- Byte Me (WhoDiedAndM@deYou.Emperor), November 08, 1999.

Hey "byte me", it's good that you're glad because I did what you said a long time ago. Some who signed are indeed knowledgeable about y2k, which is exactly why I'm surprised they signed it.

It was stupid to send an open letter to Greenspan in the first place. The letter should go to the President.

With the exception of his last item, Larry's list looks pretty sensible to me. Significant infrastructure failures would prevent most businesses from functioning anyway -- certainly my employer can't function without power or water or phones, nor would they attempt to function if employees couldn't get to work, nor in the midst of explosions or riots. But there are few reasons I can see for staying home if businesses can function fairly normally. There are very few (if any) systemic problems that would require staying home while (most) businesses can operate satisfactorily.
