Newspaper Fireplace logs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Help...we live in the city, and are on a very tight budget (trying to save and get to the country). I used to have instructions for fireplace logs made out of newspaper.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ging

Stagger about a half-Sunday worth of sections an inch exposed. Roll tightly by hand or around a broom stick. Secure with masking tape or string. A layer of cardboard can be worked in or used on the outside. Some sources recommend soaking the logs in water and then drying them, but I have only used them fresh. Works. Avoid the glossy pages and magazines, they make a persistant ash, don't catch too well, and are more likely to contain material best not put into the air.

This has become such a popular topic I started paying attention to it.And what I found was that rolling a section of newspaper (depends on the paper and the day of the week: about 24 pages works for me) into a long tube and tying it into a pretzel knot makes a great log. Theyre easy to make, and really burn great.

My neighbors made them one year and they had a roller that did the work and used a garden hose to wet the paper. Don't know if they are still available but i can contact them and find out.

Check out www.ehow.com for instructions using yarn dipped in candle wax.
