Uncle Sam Not Holding Back Y2K Info - Koskinen

By Bob Woods, Newsbytes WASHINGTON, DC, U.S.A., 04 Nov 1999, 4:41 PM CST

Contrary to some rumors making the rounds in the information technology (IT) world, the federal government is not holding back any information from the public in regards to the Year 2000 (Y2K) technology problem, the man in charge of Y2K remediation efforts for the White House said today.

Speaking before a joint House of Representatives hearing on the Y2K problem - the last such hearing before the fateful date of Jan. 1, 2000 - John Koskinen, the chairman of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion, said a small number of people in the Y2K community feel that the government is holding back data on Y2K.

But Koskinen told the House members that his personal goal is to "have the American public "feel that they know everything I know about Y2K."

Koskinen addressed a number of Y2K "myths and realities" in his testimony. One item is the conception that things IT-related will be fine after Jan. 1. "Year 2000 challenges can happen any time a computer that is not Y2K-compliant comes into contact with a Year 2000 date - before or after Jan. 1," he said.

Also, he said that Y2K information coming from industry and government should be trusted because such data is not self-reported, as is widely believed. "Most organizations have structures in place whereby independent authorities have been reviewing the results of Y2K testing," he said.

Just like in Forrest Gump.

"Run Johnny...run...."

This guy is really gonna have a hard time explaining himself during FUBAR days here at the old ranch when the well runs dry on stupid things to say about Y2k.

From another great movie classic Rambo..

"It's over Johnny!!!!"

Anyone have an email address for John Koskinen?

Did you notice the precise wording: his personal goal is to "have the American public feel that they know everything I know about Y2K." He is NOT saying that he wants the American public to know all he does...just to FEEL that they do. Subtle difference, but these word games seem like deja vu all over again... What he is saying is that he wants our perceptions to be ok...why don't I trust him?

Interesting that this comes on the same day that the PA Public Utilities Committee rules that a citizens action group in PA DOESN'T have the right to FOIA info about their local utilities readiness for Y2K.

Heard on Jeff Rense show: http ://www.broadcast.com/shows/endoftheline/99archives.stm

Direct re alaudio link... mentioned right at the beginning.

His "personal goal" that we "feel" we know everything. This is his official response that the gov't is holding back information?

I should of tried that line on my mother when I was growing up. "Gary who broke this lamp?" "Gee mom I don't know but I hope you feel like you know everything I know" Can I go out and play with the reporters now?

I'm sure it's all "out there" on some public website on an obscure server with some 80 letter address...in plain sight.

Or, maybe it's in a downloadable pdf file but unfortunately the link isn't working quite right and the pdf downloads but is corrupted somehow. Maybe it's a serious of 10 or 20 pdf files, each one 40k, located on different servers with different links.

It's all out there, though. In plain sight. It couldn't be hidden, in plain sight, could it?

"We didn't hide anything." Plausible deniability.

The idea that somehow we need Kosky to diseminate Y2K info. to the unwashed masses is both egocentric and ridiculous.

This forum, the Internet in general, hundreds of Y2K books, etc.

The info. has always been there.

Yes, only he can tell us the "myths and realities".

The fixing of code, understanding the stakes, software metrics and the problem itself, companies and gov't telling the truth, doing contingency planning... ALL MYTHS......

Help, I am on information overload. Can anyone remember which Senate Hearing Documents have the little "40 page (or so) docs submitted privately" because of the "worrisome" nature. I recall they were afraid it might start a "stampede" (my word, lol, they didn't really use it) lol, lol, lol

KOSKY - I FEEL THE "NEED" FOR THAT INFORMATION!!!!!

Kosky **** I feel the NEED to see this 44 page assessment on the risks of Institutional banking!!!!!!!!!!!! I realize how imprudent it is for the cows to see it, but I FEEL THE NEED!

Institutional banking

International institutional banking is a global network.

International Monitoring believes threats to international banking could pose the greatest Y2K risk. A separate 44-page section of the statement has been submitted that covers these risks.

At this point, we do not feel it is prudent to publicly discuss the detailed risks faced by international banking in a broad media forum such as the one before us today.
