Answers

ed,

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that I get far fewer busys when I start at the "recent answers" page, instead of the "top level" page. Mr. Greenspun made some changes, 6-8 weeks ago (?), that appears to "cache" the recent answers page.

Give it a try. <:)=

Thanks alot Mr. Sysman for blowing my "secret" about how to get connected. :-)

Ed,

You forgot to add RANT ON in the body of your thread!!!

Excuse me but have the words "THANK YOU" ever enter your consciousness regarding this website?? To WHO you say?? Well, lets start with Ed Yourdon, Phil Greenspun, all the moderators, great posters, lurkers, pollys, doomers, etc.,etc. that make this site absolutely FIRST CLASS!!! You sound like every other punk, yuppy, crybaby, whiner that this forum rants about which are destined to go thru some real hard times very soon. GET A LIFE !!! THese guys aren't hear to please you, and buy the way, your getting way more than your payin' fur' bucko !!! Phil G., Ed, THANK YOU for this forum, and BTW, I'm no a**kisser, just very thankful that this site even exists or I would have gone postal months ago. RANT OFF

You're welcome, A.

Also, once you do get either page, RIGHT click, and OPEN IN NEW WINDOw for individual threads. Then, just close that window when you're done reading, and the top level will still be there. Hit the RELOAD button when you want an update, but not after you read every thread!

That also seems to help. My $.02 <:)=

I like this part...

"Probably the relational database management system that sits behind this site is in trouble. This causes threads to stack up waiting for the RDBMS. In this situation, the best thing we can do is ask people to try again in a few minutes."

No, that isn't the "best" thing they can do. It might be the only thing they can afford to do, or the only thing they know how to do, but isn't the best thing they can do. The best thing they can do is fix it.

Sysman: Now that right click on the link for a new window is "kuhl". "Real" thanks this time. :-)

-- A (A@AisA.com), November 03, 1999.

Well, anyway, it looks like Phil is getting a lot of practice in programming/running a high volume server without crashing. Better "server busy" rather than "server crashed". :-)

Did you know if you right click while holding down the control key and F12 key you can instantly see where a person is posting from? It even gives their real email address.

Just a minor point that wsan't madee real clear above:

This forum is running on a GIFT server from MIT, as an experimental software development tool. Therefor, it is FREE to our use, so as the old tourist trap placque sez:

"QUITCHERBITCHEN"

or the more popular version:

"QUITCHERBELLYACHIN"

Chuck, who has a couple of the latter with "Thendara" and "Adirondak Mountains" and "Brate's Indian Stand" on them kickin around.

Hmmm....

Why all of the 'busy' signals? Just yesterday, a polly said this was a dying forum. Looks pretty busy to me. Another example of a dumb polly statment.

Gotta agree with Chuck here. This is a FREE site/service and we have no business complaining...

Any shortcut keys for those without right click buttons? As in those with Macs or WebTV, etc.?

(((THANK YOU Phil)))

...for hosting us here... FREE OF CHARGE!!!

(And may the Y2K Bug bypass MIT completely!)

(So, if you can't get in, go find a great newsbyte to post when you do make it back in, please).

Yes, that ? keeps most site rippers from working on Greenspuns forums. You CAN drop threads into the 'offline' folder in IE or Netscape, and they will download. Do THAT with thirty or forty threads all at once, and you will lock everyone out of the forum, since Greenspun put a limit on it. And you will get about half of them loaded as 'server busy'.

I am unable to access the "recent answers" page today. It returns this message, "Ouch. You've encountered an error. Probably a programming error on our part." This is a new one on me...anyone else getting this?

See... the "real" Phil... on this thread...

speeding up this software a bit

I have changed the software a bit so that it should be faster.
