greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I am curious to know the prevailing attitude among the techies in Silicon Valley. There must be many Silicon Valley folks on this forum altho I have only seen one for sure--Ms Squire.

Not a direct response to your question Lars, but you might want to inquire of opinions among the who work in the Silicon forest...or the Boston beltway.

Ex-Silicon Valley lurker.

There are no Y2K problems in Silly Valley, Just send more money for the start ups.....

From the heart of it all....

Things will get worse before they get better...

In a neighborly "chat" over a Halloween visit, was discussing the Y2K situation with an Executive for a large internet backbone company you all know and love. (So does the Dow). At any rate the Exec feels the effects in Silicon Valley will be secondary, supply-chain, especially from the Pacific Rim. Also said in meetings with PG&E that they will be "fine."

Can only hope!

My son in law is a computer geek in the silicone valley and he is the sweetest man to walk this earth. But he has told me from the beginning when I first started researching the y2k issue that there is nothing to worry about. He definitely has his loveable head in the clouds. The frustrating thing is my daughter follows his lead. She tells me that he is the expert and she listens to him. In defense of my daughter, she is bright and intelligent as can be but she has done no research at all on the y2k issue. Very frustrating! Cecilia

"[He] is a computer geek in the silicone valley ..."

Is that where implants come from, or does it refer to the space between them?

I am a programmer in Silicon Valley and can tell you that there is so much "de Nile" (denial) here that the pyramids should be moved to San Jose. Actually, there is a pyramid that the Rosicrusians built several years ago.

While we are providing anecdotal information, I thought I'd mention that I again spent Halloween with two aquaintances -- a colleague from our computer sciences department and an executive director from a local hospital.

Computer Scientist -- As found this time last year (and as expected), all I got was the "arrogant scoff". It was lced with moronic responses to my probes like "the stock market is not over valued", "we won't be affected by problems abroad", "the Russian nuke plants are programmed to simply shut down", "the IEEE should worry about more important things", etc.

Hospital Administrator -- A GI last year, a GI this year. Suggested that the numbers showing problems in 50% of the hospitals sounded about right. His own hospitals concerns are supported by heavy contingincy planning. He's most spooked (a little Halloween humor) about loss of water. Still thinks some hsopitals will be bagging bodies when early next year.

As an further aside, the head of our business school is what I would call an economic GI -- big global economic problems.

Just waiting now for the pre-game shows to end and the first quarter to begin in earnest.
