DON'T buy Federal .22 cal., copper plated, long rifle, hollow points (550 rd. box). This ammo is absolute shit; about every fourth round is a dud:(

-- Ocotillo Maybe it's your gun or you got a bad batch of ammo cause the ammo works great for me, over 1000 rounds and no missfires.

I have to second that. I have shot 1,000's of rounds of the Federal 550/box and no problems with "duds". I have had a few stovepipes in my 10/22, but I am not complaining. It's the cheapest round to plink with. There is a prefragmented .22 round out there that is much better for hunting/"defense" situations. I have forgotten the name of it, but the article I saw rated it the best of the .22 rounds. It breaks into three equal sized pieces upon impact with the target. I will try to get the name of it on this post later.

Octillo - check your firing pin dent. Should entirely flatten the rim but not enough to leave a sharp edge. Firing pin should not be sharp enough to cut the metal. Total area dented should be no bigger than a 1/8 inch long line made by a .7 mm pencil.

I bought some Aguila ammo on-line on the recommendation of a friend. Granted its Mexican but the 40 grain HP's do the job and I haven't had a misfire yet! Course than I also took the time to pick upsome .22 tracer. Seems like those rearbits also come out at night...in clusters.

What is the diff between hollow point and reg?

-- brainless (dumb@about.guns), October 29, 1999.

Brainless A regular .22 caliber bullet has a rounded top ( domed or hemispherical ) or sometimes a truncated cone shaped top, but are completely solid. A hollow point bullit has a hole or indentation at the tip which sometimes extends into the bullit for half of its length. The purpose is two fold: to "encourage" the bullit to expand upon impact ( sometimes called upset ), and to provide more meplat ( flat area at the head of the bullit ). The idea is that a rapidly expanding bullit is more likely to impart its energy into the target because of the increased frontal area provided by the expansion. Hollow points are less likely to over penetrate ( go through the target ) but are more likely to disintegrate upon impact. Meplat provides more "slap" or punch at the surface as the bullit hits its target. Most self defense ammunition is designed with some type of hollow point bullit. However, .22 caliber is not considered to be a good choice for self defense.

No misfires after about 10,000 rounds of the Federal hollow points, two different guns. But I was getting 3 or 4 misfires per box from the Remingtons. Could have been bad boxes, but I got the Remingtons at different times.

I get best accuracy with CCI, both guns. FWIW.

Thanks Bullit Bob! That is a very useful thing to know, I'm glad I asked.

How much for fifty cal?

-- Keep Shooting (Wisdom@Bible.God), October 29, 1999.

I have used the Federal hollowpoint from WalMart many times over the years. it is in my opinion far better than the bargain basement Remington Thunderbolt .22 Long Rifle. It sounds to me that your gun could have a problem with the firing pin. It is also my experience that a gun with a light hammer strike will cause a problem with primer ignition. Even the cheap Remington ammo will fire from my Marlins tho I have had trouble with my Rugers on occasion. The Federal is also in my experience alot cleaner shooting ammo.
