Finish up Preps NOW.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I don't usally post FEELINGS but,,,,,,,. I have a weird feeling the y2k bubble is about to break. It may be, that we are about down to the 60 day mark, I don't know. I have picked this weekend to dot the I's and cross the T's. At 8 weeks out the .gov cannot hold their hand close to the vest anymore. If you are not done preparing, I urge you to finish up now.

Know what you mean. Had the feeling for a few days. Then heard a story from a credible source (my opinion) about a high school calling an assembly to announce school closing Nov.1 "to allow the building to be converted for use as emeregency shelter"

I'm not usually one to feel jittery, and maybe it IS because it is just closer, but lately everything is making me nervous. We are doing our at-home Y2K drill the weekend of Nov. 12-14 (first weekend we can do it). No heat, no lights no using the electric range, etc. Unplugging most things (not the fridge and freezer). We'll see what we have forgotten. In using the camp stove lately, I have discovered it takes way longer than I thought to boil water, cook pasta, etc on a camp stove (I never camped, can you tell?)

Best of luck!

-- Preparing (preparing@home.com), October 27, 1999.

Preparing, I bought one of those Coleman one-burner stoves that runs on a single propane cylinder (I think you can buy an adapter to run on a 5-gallon propane bottle). Anyway, it boils water in 4 minutes! I bought it the other day at WalMart on sale for $18.00. I'm not getting jittery, I believe something significant has to happen in order for the sheeple to wake up. Most have made up their mind that nothing is going to happen and they will continue on their path. Unless we see bank runs and shortages of goods, and the media runs with it, it will be business as usual. JMHO

Hey Flame Away... you got any hot tips about the NFL? I am in a money pit and need a quick way out... ya got any feelings 'bout it?

-- (madame@psycho. the psychic), October 27, 1999.

Funny, that's the way I felt in AUGUST!

-- Mara (MaraWayne@aol.com), October 27, 1999.

Take a week off from this forum and you'll feel much better. And guess what! Nothing of any significance will happen in the meantime.

-- SH (squirrel@hunter.com), October 27, 1999.

Flame Away,

YOU ARE Correct--OH GREAT ONE!!

Actually the infinite intelligence informed me that it (downward spiral) had started the week of oct.11th when the stock market dropped a record 600plus points.

It will be all down hill from here!!!

The message from above is this------------------------ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

**--JUST WATCH--**

-- D.B. (dciinc@aol.com), October 27, 1999.

Just Watch?

I presume that would imply waiting and being patient. So I guess going around trying to get people to prepare out of fear of the unknown is not logical.

Thanks, another point scored for rational people everywhere, from your favorite club and mine; "The Doomer Disconnect Gang".

Back alley,

Ok---here is what I think when I read a post like yours-----------------

"duh!!--doh!!

Back alley---just one question and it is a legit, sincere question.

Are you an idiot!!!

Please read Mabels thread below regarding all of the information available to anyone with half a brain.

You remind me of the huge segment of our society that can only deal with certain realities in life via denial.

-- D.B. (dciinc@aol.com), October 27, 1999.

Oh I see, as opposed to people like you who resort to insults.

Gotcha! ;o)

-- (go@back. to the valley), October 27, 1999.

You dumb A--,

I take it your original post- in response to mine- was sincere and meant to inspire a warm fuzzy feeling!!

Your damn right regarding insults.

Anyone that cannot see the storm clouds brewing with all of the weather reports available is a fool and deserves to be insulted.

Its called not suffering fools lightly---which at this time I am guilty of.

Won't be long now.

Preparing,

Think of the type of cooking you are doing in relation to the type of pan you choose. Quick cooking, boiling water, select a thinner pan, glass and enamel. Long cooking times, use cast iron or heavy stainless steel. Lids are a must.

If you have a wood stove, preheat pans on that, even if cooking on a coleman. Setting cooking and cleaning water in a large pot, even on a warm, dying fire on a woodstove for "preheating" saves the fuel from starting "cold". :-)

Yeah, at whatever...it won't be long now.

Whatever...don't you SHILL for Viagra??

Hey flame Away- maybe you got those feelings cause the rocks are supposed to come down on Nov. 7!! In any event- rocks or no rocks- a good time to finish preps anyway...:)

DB;

Insults don't help anything. Unless of course they make _you_ feel better about yourself. Now a logical man would wonder why a self proclaimed stock market guru would ever feel compelled to make himself feel better at the expense of others.

Oh right, bully... that's what they call your kind... bullies!

But as we all know bullies are actually scared, and insecure.

You can live life anyway you want to, but scared and insecure isn't going to get you any respect my man.

Now if you care to discuss the original topic, that is, why should anyone stockpile for something that should have ALREADY of happened to some degree. Hmmm? April 1, October 1? Ring a bell?

That's right, it rings a closing bell for the day's trading, because if Y2K were going to be bad there would precursors in the stock market. That is what Yourdon said, North said, and what Hamasaki and his JAE said.

So... tell us again about how 600 points is a downward spiral that should lead us to believe that y2k disaster is immiment.

Maybe you can also shed some light about TODAY'S trading analysis?

Call me a skeptic, but I think all your research is based on what DB FEELS at any given time about the world.

You do have an opportunity to prove me wrong... starting now:

Sorry, I wanted to mention to everyone else that the Dow is UP 16.78 today. Hardly a downward spiral huh?

Okay DB, you got the floor:

Tom,

Did your source say why this was being done so early? What else did you hear?

-- Maggie (aaa@aaa.com), October 27, 1999.

DB,

Believe me my friend, it does, it really does.

Flame Away --

I went to sleep on this issue for about 4 years. After all, the company I am with was doing good. Started early, budgeted money, staff, resources, was saying and doing all of the right things, everything. And I figured everyone was doing the same.

Then one day I got a 'feeling'. And the company wasn't doing so good. Not all the money got spent. A lot of the early time was spent 'dithering' and 'jockeying for position' and 'empire building'. Some of the staff got put on 'emergency' projects and somehow never returned. And almost every iota of information I could find suggested that the place I work was a microcosm of the entire effort.

And I started prepping. Folks, I do not know how the show is going to come out. But I DO know that 'feeling'. That fluttery little set of butterflies down there that says, 'Gee, I'm doing 110 miles an hour. I wonder if the brakes work?'. And I've had it for a while.

I don't know what the trigger event will be. May not even be anything related to Y2K. Who can fathom what will catch the public's attention? There may not anything happen until rollover. Shoot, it is on a weekend, there may not anything happen till the following week. I know people that just because the power is out, the phones don't work, the gas is off, the temperature in the house by Sunday is down to about 5 degrees above ambient, the water doesn't smell right and toilets won't flush, would simply assume that the correct response is to fire off another scathing letter to the editor about how the village government really ought to manage things better. (Wonder why the postman isn't here yet?)

But I tell you what. I am NOT counting on it. We will continue prepping right up until the last second. But if TSHTF TOMORROW we are ready for it.

Maggie. Only that the high school in question is in Michigan. Students are to have all personal belongings removed by NOV. 1ST,

TOM

-- Tom (Tom Thumb@scary.now), October 27, 1999.

The news continues to be far worse than I would like. I agree that it is important to prep as rapidly as possible...and then some. November 22 will be an interesting day (the day after the Y2K movie on TV).
