Also impressive:
"On the ground, a fully loaded aircraft, using engine reversers, can back up a two-percent slope."

They're fat, but oh my!

Oh yes, the C-17.

Watched one land (on a taxiway), stop, pull a three-point turn and then take off all in less than 3,000 of space. A C-5 or C-141 can do the landing/takeoff in 5,000 ft, but the turn-around takes an area about three times the width of the runway.

If there's one military issue Klintoon hasn't screwed-up, it's the C- 17. Amazingly they've extended the production from 120 to 180 aircraft. I expect that Congress had a lot to do with it but maybe there's funny money we haven't heard about, too.

Realistically they need to go ahead and allocate funds for 265 of the things and get the bulk-buy discount. That'll give enough aircraft for a 1 to 1 replacement of the now very old C-141s and have additional aircraft fur special operations use.

From the Boeing PR fluff Site:

http://www.boeing.com/defense-space/military/c17/c17photos.htm

>During normal testing, C-17s set 22 world records, including payload to altitude time-to-climb, and short takeoff and landing (STOL) mark in which the C-17 took off in less than 1,400 feet, carried a payload of 44,000 pounds to altitude, and landed in less than 1,400 feet.<

That is one impressive set of numbers to open with isn't it!

I bet that lady can climb like a homesick angel. I would love to get the chance to dance with her. I wonder how she descends. Feather or rock?

You are right about the numbers Wild Weasel, but we are talking about congress, which kind of limits the possibilities that they will think about getting the bulk rate price cuts. Too bad because you know that special ops will be all over that thing like a duck on a June bug. It looks it's going to be one awesome machine.

Kind of looks like a cross between the Trash Hauler as a Mommy and the Starlifter as a Daddy doesn't it? Named after "Big Shakey" too.
