greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This is just a thought that occurred to me

(or in me; or whatever thoughts do),

that maybe the cat has outgrown the microwave,

and must fly beyond the moon,

like soon, daddio don't make like a triangle

or in other words....

idea = Timebomb 2000 forum needs less clutter and more focus on core issues

Also, I think it's somewhat fucked up, the extent to which the forum has transmuted into the "get rich off-of y2k" forum. This interesting and worthwhile side angle should occupy it's own web address (ala preps and humptydumpty) because...

Y2K IS NOT JUST A GREAT BUYING OPPORTUNITY!!!

iT'S A MOST UNFORTUNATE FUCKUP, is what it is.

-Something big ...like "Atlantis"*-big???

The fact behind the figures is that "666:~)=/=Y2k" is going to makes lots and lots of people far less happy with their existence.(understatement.) It's pretty much a given. (or a gibbon. whatever.) It's disrespectful to be too fixated and jubilent about opportunities arising from disaster. y2k is shaping up to be a tragic disaster. And unlike most of the widescale tragic disasters that occur, this one looks set to hit the richer countries for once.

It's even going to hit hard at the richest country in world history. America, (or as billions describe it, with a shake of their head, "Fuckin' America!";). Same goes for the rest of us rich countries - G7 or OECD, or wherever you wanna draw the line between rich vs. screwed-over countries.,

There was this guy on the Titanic, called uh...Lenny, and what he did was, he realized before most people that the ship was going to sink. After he recovered from the intial panic, he had a brainwave that as well as getting into his own boat, he could also salvage items from the ship and sell these on land for squillions of bucks. What do we make of this???

While it's clever, and you might as well do it, you COULD be spending yo effort and time and money helping other people. WELL!!! you could.

I'm guilty of everything I'm moralising about here, so it's ok(?) -I'm having a go at us, not youz.

I'm not even sure if anyone even knows how to work out right from wrong, so I'm under no illusions as to whether I do or not. etc. Otherpeople - Are they just deadmen walking??? Or is it best to help them as much as possible, to the exclusion of helping oneself?

According to the Popular Prehistoric Longhaired Carpentry Apprentice, we're meant to help each other at every opportunity. But the horny repitilian inside me says "Fuck that for a joke. Look after Number One." And my Warm and fuzzy mammal brain sez "Well yeah, other people are sweet and beautiful and I wish them well, but basically, I'm with lizard boy..."

How to you rationalize what you do? I'm asking sincerely.

&&&&&&&&

y2k - - -Pick your battles.And this too shall pass.y2k. Good luck.

But dude, y2k has so much destructive power becuse of what it will do via the economy, and to The Economy, and to economics. We gotta focus on $$$ too.

Why delete? Because he threw his thoughts on a thread without taking the time to make them coherent? Well that's an idea! Lets delete 1/2 the archives then, as there is at least 1/2 of it all that sounds disconnected to me, that would solve one of Humpty's problem.

Humpty, take it from another flake, you're just experiencing data overload. Chose carefully the threads you read, that will help your symptoms. And try not to add to the clutter.

I remember this part. It's when you stick a couple of fingers down the diaper to see if maybe there's a specific reason for all the noise.

[sarcasm off]

We talk about whatever seems appropriate at the time. Many people have committed a vast amount of resources and sold a vast amount of equities as part of prudent preparations for a potential disaster. Human nature says that we wish to be correct at some level. Part of my "hope-for-the-best" model includes being offered a chance to get my retirement money back into equities at some point while winking at the pollys (including my stock broker brother-in-law). I'm sick and tired of feeling nuts. I want the pollys to "bite me" just a little. A little pain and suffering on Wall St. -- polly Mecca -- would suit me just fine. Quit moralizing.

jeremiah...I liked your post. Guess maybe artistic language gets lost sometimes.

I'm suffering through rationalizing everything right now...but that ability is what seperates us from "lizard boy" and the rest of the animals on the planet.

Maybe it's time we actually start paying more attention to the "Warm and fuzzy mammal brain" and less attention to the "horny reptilian". I think we've been focused on "Number One" too much at the expense of the children of this planet and the plants and the trees and all those other animals.

It's time to connect, not disconnect. If you can't feel the grass on your bare feet or the sand between your toes you wont be part of the system that matters most to sustain life.
