Response to what is welding?

There are many types of welding, and they each have many uses. It looks like you need to do a little research on your own, starting with just reading an encylopedia-- not asking someone else to write your report!!

Here is what I got from a 5 min search of the net. I'm sure you can do the same. If you have more specific questions, post them and I'm sure someone will be glad to help.

A great place to begin your research is http://www.twi.co.uk/bestprac/jobknol/jobknol.html

This sites provides information regarding the types of processes and materials involved in welding. To get an encylopedic reference, check out encarta.com and search for welding. As Sam stated, there are too many processes and materials involved to list on this page; there are entire volumes of books and university level classes devoted to the subject, but we hope that this gives you a place to start.

Basically the welding involves joining of two materials permanently by making use of atomic forces between the intimate contact surfaces unlike rivet or mechanical fastening which is less permanent. There are essentially two ways of joining: One is by physically bringing together the two workpiece surfaces by application of pressure with or without heat to deform them to intimate contact to bring about interatomic cohesive force to hold them together. The other way is to fuse the two surfaces through application of heat by arc or laser etc., and allow them to solidfy to bring about cohesiveness through bonding.
