U.S. Begins to Destroy its Missile Silos...huh?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

No doubt this is part of the Albright/Talbot/Clinton Carrol Quiglian attempt to move forward in their dream for a one world global nation.

Click on the link and see the picture of a silo being destroyed. Why now? China and N. Korea are moving full speed ahead to develop ICBM's to hit us and we are destroying our missile silos? Duhhhhh

Article: U.S. destroys the first of 150 nuclear missile sites in N.D.

'The sites and sounds of peace', says the article. I say, wishful thinking....

"For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people say,'peace and safety', then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape...

...But you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all sons of light and sons of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober...For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." -1Thess. 5:1-11, see also 2Thess.2.

The last of the Minuteman silos in the missle field surrounding Whiteman AFB in central Missouri was imploded over a year ago.

Some time around 1980,when I worked at a large aluminum foundry in Kingsville,Mo.,a visiting Japanese electronics technician rode with me from work back to his motel room in Warrensburg.During the 30 some mile trip,we passed several of these silos, which were quite obvious from the highway. He asked what they were.I explained to him that they were underground missle silos containing intercontinental ballistic missles armed with nuclear warheads, aimed(probably)at the Soviet Union.

His reaction-"Ah,yes"

The remainder of the trip was pretty quiet.

I've understood that the missile silos became obsolete once we ruled out a preemptive strike. They are, as it were, sitting ducks. We have a number of Trident submarines now, which are far less vulnerable to someone else's preemptive strike. Thus we maintain Mutual Assured Destruction as a deterrent.

Will it work? I hope we don't find out.

Evidence that the foolishness of the government (and betrayal by) has been going on a long time. We are "proving" to the Russians that our missle silos are destroyed --- how nice for them.

seems funny to me, but did they destroy the silo, or the whole complex... besides, who would look for a bunker under and old 'destroyed' missile silo? things that make you go hmmmmm.

M.A.D. has now been changed by the Clinton crowd to M.Y.T.H. :

Launch on warning has been changed to Launch on being hit. Not much a few subs can do when the enemy has 10-12k anti-ballistic missiles defending their country.

It's too late to do anything about it. Get yourselves in a safe place and get prepared. Remember Pearl Harbor. It'll come in a day when it comes.

jeremiah- There were actually pictures in Sept. or Oct. House & Garden of the home a couple built in an underground missile silo. It looked really, really nice too. They didn't mention whether or not they are doomers. Oh, to have been the one who thought of it first...

The silos being destroyed are the old Minuteman II silos. The Minuteman II missiles were removed and destroyed as part of the START treaty signed by Reagan in the 1980's. The missile launch silos also have to be destroyed as part of the treaty.

Meanwhile there are about 650 Minuteman III missiles located in silos around the upper midwestern US. And being newer and more up-to-date, the Minuteman III's are better missiles and are in deeper, more survivable silos than the ones being destroyed.

But I do wonder about the launch control facilities once the silos they controlled are gone. The ratio was one LCF per ten silos. That's quite a few really nice Y2K bunkers that could be out there on the real estate market for the well-heeled, but they'd have to move fast to get one and stock it up.

Maybe if a certain old weasel won the lottery...

They shouldn't destroy them...just sell them. They make marvelous storage sites for your preps...

BB -
I'd like to point out a couple things. First, there is still no highly effective means of stopping a nuclear attack. It has been estimated that the U.S. could probably intercept about half of oncoming missiles at most, and Russia even fewer. Second, M.A.D. will be certain in an all out nuclear conflict. The "winner" will enjoy an agonizing death which will consist of cancer from plutonium exposure and eventual starvation after the poisoned resources catch up with the ecosystem.

WW, Hope you are right about the III's.

The Start treaty was with the Soviet Union which no longer exists. The treaty is with an entity that doesn't exist. The soviets aren't obeying the treaty, so why are we? Where are the pictures of Russia blowing up her silos? The world has changed tremendously since the 80's. The U.S. only needed to worry about the Soviets, now there are other countries building missiles and pointing them at us.

miguel, we have no anti-ballistic missile defense to stop one incoming missile. Russia has 10-12 thousand.... The strategy of Russia's planned attack is to so decimate our electronics, bases, silos, leaders and subs that there will not be a retaliatory attack by us that will amount to anything. They expect and plan for 8% of their population to be killed in a nuclear exchange. They would really like it to be 20%. Murdering butchers.

M.A.D. is now an illusion and so is the peace it once promised.

I've read several articles (complete with pictures) of ordinary people buying the retired LCF's as personal dwellings. They're quite affordable, and you get lots of square feet and really well-hardened sources of power, heat, AC -- even things like elevators. Of course, you don't get much of a view...

Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) was satire. It was not real and has gone to be an Urban Legend. It was to be more accurate, mutual assured American destruction. The Soviets had evacuation plans and shelters so in place the human loss was small. The Soviets were so set to survive that the experts could even map out how the Soviets would economically recover within a few years. America on the other hand would suffer enormous human casualties. If one recalls Teller gave a fateful speech during Reagans early term that we Americans had lost the Cold War, but Reagan was workable in their opinion, and through Reagan a last ditch effort would be made to win. (We did win in that long shot because it played upon the economic crises already manifesting in the Soviet Empire.)

Silos have not been in Russian or American favor. They are the first strike target in each others nation. That is why Carter had approved of the MX race track in Nevada!
