Leading the way to Y2K!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

John Kosinkin (sp) the govenment y2k czar, had a community meeting in hartford connecticut. The posters, which advertised the event, said in big letters,

LEADING THE WAY TO Y2K! With an exclamation point! I had to save one.

I talked to him after the event and asked him three questions about subjects. Water, Shipping and ports, and railroads.

He said that water companies that were privately owned, were moveing ahead but the real concern was municipalities that owned water companies. THEY were the slowest to move.

He said that in the spring of this year, his office had with some effort finally got shipping and port people to get together for a weekend and come up with some standards, which he said he was real glad about having a hand in doing that. That it was really needed. (no explanation and I didnt ask)

And, the third thing was railroads. He said that "besides the fact that there is 50 million lines of code to be concerned about, they have thier own communication system."

I imagine you are familiar with most of these issues, but I thought I would provide the words he said to me. He was off camera.

Well, since I am reporting...

You may have heard of the Band of Boston, or, as they spell it now, BankBoston, soon to be named -Fleet Bank-. They have long been advertised in y2k circles as the or one of the leading y2k banks, having been really working on it since 95.

Well, I switched to that bank in prep of y2k. Here is the latest y2k publication from that bank to ME a regular customer.

We intend... Weve committed resources.. We have implemented a comprehensive plan... Our primary goal... we are working hard... Our goal... Were committed... Year 2000 issues are well under way...

"The forgoing description of BankBoston's year 2000 efforts is meant for informational purposes only and is not intended to constitute legal, accounting or other professional advice, nor should it be interpreted as a gauranty, representation, or warranty of any kind. In addition, many of our year 2000-related efforts are dependent upon third parties that are effectively beyond our control."

WELL! I felt good!

OUR water company made the Navy list and was listed as total failure of water and sewage. I contacted in person the head of conn y2k emergency efforts, and they could not and would not offer me ANY sentence of assurance in any way that the hartford conn water system was going to be even probably ok. The updated september list of the navy had hartford listed as a "town" this time and STILL the best they could rate us was with an --"UNKNOWN"-- status.

Great, hope YOU are better situated. I found a farmer nearby with a well. Made a deal with him.

Hmmm... Interesting. When you say "Leading the way" you are being sarcastic are you not? Particularly with reference to your bank when you say "I felt good", are you joking, or did you feel genuinely reassured by their statements?

The poster that advertised the event, a big blue 2 foot by 3 foot poster, plastered all over said "LEADING THE WAY TO Y2K!" With an exclamation point at the end. I thought that was just crazy! And funny at the same time. I saved one of them.

Bill Burke, thanks for your report, and best of luck. Sounds like a smart thang with that farmer.

Thanks, Sir.

Some days it seems like Koskinen really wants to spill his guts.

Can't wait for his memoir to come out.
