Australia's Minister for Communications and IT has confidently told Parliament that there will be no need for ordinary Australians to make any special preparations for Y2K and that there will be little or no disruption to key services.

According to Senator Richard Alston, making a national Y2K preparedness statement to Parliament today, Australia is one of the best prepared nations in the world and the country should expect business to run as usual during the changeover period.

"Australia's preparations are acknowledged internationally," said Alston. "Our preparations are so comprehensive that the relevant Federal, State and Territory Ministers believe that there is no need for ordinary Australians to make any special preparations for Y2K." Instead, he advises people should prepare for natural weather conditions typical in their local region during the New year period, including cyclones and bush fires.

The Minister revealed that 97 percent of 3,500 business-critical Commonwealth systems have now been fixed, with most of the rest due to be compliant this month.
