Excellent post. I worked on Wall Street in the mid-1980's, then moved back to the Midwest. I remember a friend who worked at the Salomon Brothers bond trading desk call me a day prior to the 1987 crash, and telling me the next day would be very bad for the stock market. It was. My point is this: these 'kids' I'm working with now have two goofy perceptions- first, that a mutual fund or stock should go up 20% annually; and second, that the market will not crash ever again. A good investor 'hedges' to minimize risk. Similarly, a wise person 'hedges' for unforseen events (like Y2K) to minimize risk.
