How the heck....?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Many Y2K notices and warnings predict anything from a few days to a few weeks of disruptions in services due to computer problems Jan.1, 2000. Now, this problem already has been studied and worked on for a year or more by agencies, organizations and business prior to the present. My question is: Assuming the glitches are NOT resolved by 1/1/2000 (and I am assuming such), how the heck do they anticipate that the problem can be remediated in "a few days" or "a few weeks" AFTER 1/1/2000? This is a naive question from a non-techie. Sorry. It has been on my mind, though, and I imagine someone in this esteemed forum can answer plainly.

Wish I had a nickle for every GI who has asked this question. If you find a polly to ask that question to, also ask them what color the sky is on their planet.

Dave, what is the currency like on your planet? We don't have nickles here...

Ingeborg:

This was the inconsistency that pushed my wife to help me with preps. Well, that and she LOVES shopping. Even for canned food and warm socks......

See Cory Hamasaki's Weather Report (WRP #129) thread about thirty threads down (on the main page -- New Questions) here.

Give me one example of a Y2K failure that will effect me?

Good Point Iceborg - Have given that exact response to pollys that tell me "they'll get it fixed and up n runnin in a few days at worse"..........yea right! If that were the case we wouldnt be having this conversation.

Redmond: How about a banking meltdown? How about oil refineries? How about the shutdown of the airlines? How about a global depression? How about the power grid shutting down? How about your own lack of the ability to see beyond the ordinary?

This is exactly why it is important to prep for as long as you possibly can, not just a few weeks or even a few months. The problems cannot be fixed in that time frame, assuming they will even be fixed at all. This is what you should prepare for, although sadly, very few people here are really doing that.
