Quick Poll: The 2000 Sydney Olympics

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

For the purposes of background I'd like to jump on here with what hopefully will be an illuminating survey of this forum's guess as to the length and severity of Y2k disruptions in the coming year.

The 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Austrailia are scheduled to begin one year from today, on Sept. 15, 2000. More than 10,000 athletes from 200 countries are slated to compete in the two-week long event.

The question is, in light of your latest understanding of the potential severity and length of the Y2k effect, will the Syndey 2000 Olympics occur? If you believe so, then please indicate the number of countries out of the 200 that you think will be able to send teams. If you do not think there will be a 2000 Olympics, then idicate simply with "zero." Thank you for your time.

I'm sure the Sydney Olympics will be a smashing success, with full athlete participation. I'm also sure that the Tinfoil contingent on this Doomer forum will disagree. Such is life...

Will the Syndey 2000 Olympics occur? - Yes How many teams out of the 200 countries will show? 198 (Nigeria and Liechtenstein will boycott due to politcal differences with Australia) Also, there will be two interesting turn of events... 1. Due to the continued decline in the value of gold, medals will be awarded as follows: 1st place= Tinfoil, 2nd place= Silver, 3rd place= Gold. 2. After winning the super bowl, the Minnesota Vikings forego the leisurley offseason in favor of practicing for the US Olympic Rowing Team. In a stunning upset, they pull ahead of the Aussies at the last minute to bring home the Tin.

Go Vikes!
Yup! Y2k's gonna be a great year in sports history.

(1) The Olympics will go on as scheduled.

(2) Participation will be down, but only slightly by athletes.

(3) Viewer participation will be down sharply.

(4) I am considering sailing down...on a compliant sailboat...but only if we have good weather data. That is hurricane season up here.

As someone who was there at Darling Harbour last night when all the fireworks were going off....

..I don't think they'll be affected. After all, there were Olympics at the height of the Depression in 1932, and again in 1936. As long as planes can fly there, and we can get some sort of telecommunication, then we should be fine. People like escapism, especially if (as I think it will be) unemployment is at 50% or so.
