"Boy Scout Motto"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Apparently, as of late some of the folks here on the threads have been trailing into Alarmist ideals, as seen from the last posting by Hoffmeister. Realistically, the concept here should be not to push one individual/groups agenda forward, but to attempt to raise the awareness level of our little web communitee here. With all the infighting and political/body politic attitudes as of late, it's hard to imagine how things are going to go for us all. Unlike past disasters, rather EVENTS, this one is real and has a definate date. There is no avoiding this one. This is not like Hurricane Dennis, "We know its out there but not where or when it will hit" This is the first time in the history of modern man that we have successfully predicted a potentially disasterous event. If we were not to prepare for it, then woe to the foolishly unprepared. You can't say you weren't warned. I vaguely remember in 1980 when Mt St. Hellens went balistic that the residents were told "Hey there...you might want to leave...this place may be in trouble soon." Many people scoffed at that, and today hikers walk upon their unmarked and vaguely known graves. Better to follow the old boy scout motto, then to be woefully and sadly caught unawares. "ALWAYS BE PREPARED!"

Be Prepared. That's the motto of the Boy Scouts.

"Be prepared for what?" someone once asked Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting,

"Why, for any old thing." said Baden-Powell.

The training you receive in your troop will help you live up to the Scout motto. When someone has an accident, you are prepared because of your first aid instruction. Because of lifesaving practice, you might be able to save a nonswimmer who has fallen into deep water.

But Baden-Powell wasn't thinking just of being ready for emergencies. His idea was that all Scouts should prepare themselves to become productive citizens and to give happiness to other people. He wanted each Scout to be ready in mind and body for any struggles, and to meet with a strong heart whatever challenges might lie ahead.

Be prepared for life - to live happily and without regret, knowing that you have done your best. That's what the Scout motto means.

You are,

You were doing great until you added that "idiot" at the end of your URL. Why not stop when you're ahead (i.e. before you make yourself look like a jerk)?

To the extent that Y2K is a local phenomenon, then it is EXACTLY a matter of, "We know its out there but not where or when it will hit". In fact, this may be the way it most resembles a hurricane (or tornado).

Dear You're taking it...

You said "But Baden-Powell wasn't thinking just of being ready for emergencies. You had me right up until you resorted to name calling. Looks to me like Billy got it right and you are the one who is taking things out of context. You should remember the creed and not the motto.

By the way, its people like you that Billy-Boy was talking

Obviously U.R. only read the parts he wanted to, and petty name calling is exactly part of the petty problems these threads are having. And where if I may ask give you the all-seeing right to get so haughty when it comes to the Baden-Powell Motto there parder? After reading a posting from your likes I'll be happy with the one I had in Ranger School"...Though I be the lone survivor..."

Part of my post got clipped. I wanted to point out that there are cells of this sexist international scout cult in nearly every community. Why, members may be attending school with your children or grandchildren at this very moment. Why they may even lurk in your very homes and eat at your table. You - yes you - could be guilty of harboring a religious-survivalist-preparedness-patriotic cult member. Especially watch out for those they call Eagle Scouts. They have been singled out for leadership training, and have been known to infiltrate into the highest levels of government where they may at any time revert to their insidious programming and take steps to "be prepared" or even "do a good turn daily".

Scary isn't it. Be afraid, be very afraid.
