Paging Yourdonites About Chat Sessions

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Many of you, but not all, know that some of us have been having real-time chat sessions over the past few months on a variety of Y2K-related subjects. Mostly prep but not exclusively so -- everything from gardening to security, financial markets and bug-out bags.

We use AOL's Instant Messenger, which you can download from http://aol.com (you need version 2.0 or higher).

If you are interested in participating, send me an email (that is, if you're not already on my email list; if you are, you will be hearing from me shortly.

We have been on a brief summer break, but the exciting Y2K fall premiere season lies ahead .....

Do you have to be on AOL? (yuck!)

-- Cherri (sams@brigadoon.com), September 05, 1999.

No, you only need Instant Messenger, which can be downloaded for free FROM AOL. Actually, as you'd expect, AOL users sometimes have weird problems depending on whether they are connected to AOL as an ISP or not. Go figure. You may also have IM 2.X if you have a recent version of Netscape (4.6).

BigDog:

Months ago I signed up for AOL Instant Messanger.

I tried using all sorts of English words for a username, but they were already taken. I ran out of patience.

Then I tried German words and encountered a similar problem.

I finally settled upon BlutFliege, but that was so weird, I decided not to bother with signing on.

And yet I still periodically get AOL software notification to sign on as a new user.

Well, I did, and my password was even weirder.

If I wait long enough, the Internet will crash, and I won't be bothered by the AOL software notification messages.

Randolph --- BlutFleige? Hey, go for it!

-- BigDog (BigDog@duffer.com), September 05, 1999.

BigDog:

No, it's *BlutFliege*, literally a "blood fly".

I don't want to be a cyberparasite, but I guess I qualify as such in this forum.

Maybe it's best I don't infest the AOL IM. Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

I'm game...when I have time. Let me know at (yes, AOL is my ISP...its a family thing, not by choice) UNCLB0B@AOL.COM. The "0" in Bob is a "zero"...

Regards...

Unk, (oh DAMN, NOW we got TWO Unk's) Just make sure BD has your IM screen name so you can be invited to the chats. And Cheri, I can almost guarantee that there will be an invite to the chats. Y'all may not get nuch out of them because they are pretty "PREP" oriented, but you are more than welcome to toss in your 0.02 $US.

Chuck, an AVID (if usually LATE participant)

PS this would go for BOTH of the Unks, B and D
