Credit Card problems on 09/04/1999 and 09/05/1999

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I live in Southern California. Yesterday and again today I was at Blockbuster video. The credit card reading system at BV has been down since yesterday morning causing the staff to call in for authorization. I assume BV is testing their "contingency plans" (just kidding).

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Blockbuster Video? You're spending your money there and they're having computer problems? You're doing it all wrong, Uncle Bob. You should go to my website at http://www.y2ksurvive.com and click on the Books button, which will take you to the Amazon Books doorway and you can order online at a wonderful discount with no sales tax and delivery in about three days. I order all my books, CD's, and videos from them and have never had a single problem.

I just can't see getting in the car and working my way through all that traffic and heat, finding a place to park, finding the product I want, waiting in line to pay and then having to pay sales tax on the purchase. Online is the only way to go. Too bad it'll all be gone in less than four months.

Uncle bob!....Question?...I take it your using a credit card at blockbuster is to conserve your cash on hand??

Wild bill CODY...Question?......HUH!!??

He, He, He, very funny.

Actually, I paid cash. But, the cash-poor patrons ahead of me yesterday and today were having problems. Being the "good soldier" that I am, I asked the manager who was more than happy to fill me in on all of the details.

Regarding books, yes, I prefer to read. However, my 15 year old son broke his neck 10 days ago, so, we are relegated to the "idiot box" and books on tape. He's okay except for the pound of titanium he'll carry around in his neck for the next 60 years or so, which is better than driving a wheelchair and having a respirator; he is very-very lucky.

Uncle Bob,

Compared to the incredibly lucky outcome with your son's injury, everything else -- including whatever Y2K experiences you go through -- pales into insignificance. I have a daughter and two sons, and thus far, only one of them has fallen on his head. It was 15 years ago, and it was a long, long night at the hospital before we learned that he was perfectly okay.

Take whatever you need from Blockbuster. Give them your wallet, your credit card, and your car keys if necessary, and count yourself very very lucky.

Ed,

Thank's for your kind thoughts. Being a parent is more challenging than debugging 3 million lines of code I'm sure. And thank you for all of your work on Y2k.

Uncle Bob,

Blockbuster was alright in central CA on friday evening, but the lines were the longest I've ever seen. I took a 14 year old that was nursing wounds born from not being invited to a dance at a friend's new school.

Best of luck to you & yours for a speedy recovery.

Well said Ed!

Uncle Bob,

My heart goes out to you & your family. We have been there.

The earth stands still.

I'm so glad to hear he's going to be okay!!!!

Oh dear Uncle Bob!! I have a 15 year old son who's still in one piece and I know the feeling in Ed's post. I want to give my wallet and house to Blockbuster Video in my son's name! He's an avid user himself. That you slip that news in so nonchalently speaks volume of your humbleness and cool head. What luck! But still the pain is felt by your family.

My heart goes out to you.

Uncle Bob, Cody gave me an idea, but unfortunately your addy isn't real. If you'd write me, I'd tell you about it. It'd be much cheaper than giving my house away to Blockbuster Video in my son's name.

Uncle Bob,

To follow on Chris' thought, the public libraries carry all kinds of terrific videos and books on tape.

Uncle Bob,

I can only imagine the tortures you and your family endured in those hours before you knew your son would be okay. There's nothing I can add to the good thoughts and well wishes that have already been so eloquently extended by the other folks here.

Peace, health, and all good things to you and yours on the other side.

Uncle Bob -

Best to your son on a speedy recovery. Know where you are... Our son did a head stand off his bicycle 3 years ago and is now OK with a piece of plastic in his head, 4 months total in the hospital and 5 cranial surgeries later...he is OK now. It is just Mom and Dad with the gray hair. BELIEVE ME! it is one adventure I don't wish on anyone. I am glad your son is OK and kudos to you and spouse for surviving the ordeal. Faith gets stronger , but it is a traumatic way to grow! God Bless!

Uncle Bob: Glad he is going to be OK, that must have been a very rough time for everyone.

At 15, your son is probably getting ready for some mudwrestling videos, which will probably help towards a speedy recovery.
