China's Power Sector Passes Y2K Test - Paper

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's power distribution system has passed its first and most critical test for the millennium bug, the official China Daily reported Thursday.

"We have successfully passed the most dangerous time period for the millennium bug," it quoted Jiao Baoli, a senior official at the State Power Corporation of China, as saying.

The newspaper said the first test for the Year 2000 (Y2K) bug was of the most sensitive date -- from December 31 this year to January 1, 2000.

"No problems occurred during the first phase of Y2K testing," said Jiao, who is in charge of the tests.

The Chinese power system had its first test for the Y2K bug on August 31. Computers which use only two digits for the year could confuse 2000 with 1900 and send whole systems crashing.

A second test was scheduled for Wednesday and others are due on September 3, 4 and 8.

China has already tested its financial sector and said it found no problems.
