What internet hook up do you recommend for my dad?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Thanks for your input. My dad's going to buy a computer and get on the internet. I need your advice. He's smart, 62 and doesn't know much about computers. Great machinist before retiring.

What internet service provider would you recommend checking out? What about web TV and that sort of thing? What should he look for in the computer he buys. He'll spend $3000+ to get a good one.

He buys and sells industrial machinery. Also sells antiques and collectibles. He has a 50 by 150 foot warehouse stuffed with antiques, collectables and machinery/tools. He's looking to both buy and sell stuff via the internet. He will download stuff from companies on machinery, parts, ect. He's thinking about buying a digital camera to take pictures of the stuff he's got for sale and put it on the web, ect. He want's to start using e-mail, ect.

Neither he or I know about the e-commerce aspect of buying and selling, doing business on the web. He wants to get a computer that will allow him to do business on the internet -- and get hooked up to the internet the right way. Also, what about waiting till Microsoft releases Windows 2000 (Sept. 99?).

THANKS A MILLION! I WANT TO HELP MY DAD! ALSO DIRECT HIM HERE TO READ ABOUT Y2K.

Hopefully someone will direct you to a place which doesn't provide access to this forum. If you inherited your genes from him then we'd be in for a lot more off topic posts.

Forum administrator, please delete this thread.

Hey xyz,

What's wrong with tapping the resourses of others here with more knowledge than I have on an issue. I have offered a lot of advice on posted questions here -- and on subject that the community here did not have a lot of expertise with. My post isn't totally off topic, since then my dad can reaserch Y2K some more, since I've gotten him interested.

In short, I'm asking for info now -- but HAVE given lots here in the past -- including lots that is NOT readily attainable.

So, xyz, why don't you go to the nearest toilet, stick your head in as far as you can, and FLUSH!!!!

-- Junior (Junior@lurker.com), August 30, 1999.

Ahh, be nice to the kid. After all, he is going to bring us a new reader!

I'ld look into hi-speed access in your area. Check with your cable-TV company. ISDN isn't too bad, if your phone company offers it. You could also consider DirectPC, a satellite service from the DirectTV people. I'm going to go this route next year, if the world survives, since we can't get anything else here. You still need a phone line to upload, at 56K, with DirectPC, but the download is 400K.

All of these will cost you a few bucks more, but I think it's well worth it.

And another thing, xyz,

Part of my reason for posting the question was to show my dad the power of the internet for colaborative purposes. How you can build a collective of helpfull information really fast. Then you go and insult him and me. I don't think one flush is going to do it for your stinkin thinkin xyz -- flush and flush again, jackoff!

Now, is there anybody out there who would like to respond to my original questions? Or does the community here lack the expertise or willingness to help a really swell dad who has helped LOTS of people VERY MUCH his whole life!! And don't tell me "it's about Y2K" or that I'm wasting the group's time here either. Will all the doomer vs. polly ranting and the NWO and military law stuff, maybe something on a sunnier topic, like helping to equip a newbie would bring some sunshine into your day and improve the "karma" here. Thank you helpful types for helping my dad. If you knew him, you would feel glad you were able to.

-- Junior (Junior@lurker.com), August 30, 1999.

Junior, take your attitude, your language, your questions, and your father the fuck away from here. This forum is for y2k and related discussions, not personal computing drivel. There are plenty of forums on the net that would be more than happy to blabber with you about your concerns. You are acting like a troll and you didn't even have the decency to prefix your post with an "OT".

-- Bye junior (@ .), August 30, 1999.

Junior--no one likes to help out a cocky little twerp. And no one here cares that pop has a warehouse full of antiques. He won't be needing those antiques come December 31, 1999. He should get his butt in gear and sell them NOW so he can have some money to buy beans and rice instead of a useless computer. But then again, what do any of us know about that? Furthermore, I think your a troll and just couldn't help yourself and I just couldn't help myself to call you on it.

-- jr mints (jrmints@jrmintss.com), August 30, 1999.

Sysman,

Thank you for the helpful post.

jr mints, bye junior, and other butt wads,

No thanks to you jerks. Anybody with much intelligence can tell by the title of this thread that it's OT. Also, the point about the warehouse of stuff is to give some magnitude of what might be photographed and uploaded, not to "brag" in some way. Plenty of money, and food enough without selling anything, thank you, JERKS.

The replies I've gotten have convinced me that this forumn has indeed morphed to the point where STINKBOMB 2000 is indeed the correct moniker. There are some fine folk around here, but their percentages have dimminished way too much for my taste over the last few months. Now I hope those I've refered to this site for Y2K info don't bother. Now it's mostly anti-society and hope for TEOTWAWKI puke drivel spewed forth by too many sickos of late.

As one insulting reply indicated by the statement that my dad needs to sell all his stuff and buy rice and beans before year end indicate, if you don't think Y2K = TEOTWAWKI you are looked on with disdain and contempt for not "getting it" -- or at least not to the same degree as the doomers here have "gotten it" -- and I sure don't want to catch the mental sickness that I see exhibited in their post. Like all the NWO/martial law or puke drivel advocating violent overthrow via lyching public officials, ect.

Though some of you people here are A OK, to the rest of you pukes, I say you're pathetic loosers who hope for TEOTWAWKI because you hope for a situation where you THINK your lot in life might improve -- like a civil war or mad max since you THINK you're prepared. Pathetic mental pathology sez me and most people with a decent mind. I've got news for you doomer pukes. With my background and training, if Y2K does bring TEOTWAWKI, any of you self styled "Rambo" bozos who THINK you're prepared and tuff wouldn't stand a chance against me -- if "conflict" ever results between me and you, you delusional doomer dummies will be dead before you knew what hit you -- you pathetic puke wanta be Rambo type doomer pukes wouldn't stand a chance against me in battle/combat -- lots of others could tell you --if they were around to do so -- or if you asked them at your next new age seance.

I'll say one thing to you pathetic doomer pukes. I do believe Y2K will be more than a BITR, but you pathetic pukes have turned this man off to -- and against -- this forumn. That's for sure. From now on, I won't be wasting my time checking in to here. After this post, I'm gone for good and won't even check back to see what kind of pathetic puke reply any of you might offer -- just so I can KNOW I HAD THE LAST WORD WITH YOU PATHETIC DOOMER PUKE DiSPICABLE PEOPLE HERE. GOOD BYE AND GOOD RIDDENCE YOU LOWLIFE MAGGOT SCUM PUKE SHIT HEAD DUMB FUCKS.

Well, now wasn't that special.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, Junior.

-- (Bye@bye.junior), August 30, 1999.

Darn it, he left. Here I sit, water and other things dripping from my hair, properly chastised by Junior's eloquent response to my impudent suggestion. My head wouldn't fit very far, so in compensation I was going to offer a suggestion. When Senior (Junior's dad) posts his trinket's for sale on this forum, he could say that it's ON TOPIC because ... well ,let me see .. oh yeah, they're Y2K compliant trinkets ... yeah, that's it.

Junior,

I hope you haven't left. The above posts were put on here by the same person that is obviously not a regular poster on this forum.

You'll get plenty of help. Try not to take those posts seriously, and that goes for any other newbies to the forum. It only takes ONE to get folks going, and there is always going to be ONE. So ignore them and send your dad here to the forum after he gets hooked up.

There's lots of proper forums out there about marketing, etc. I recommend he start with CNET and WebPromote

Now, Y2K topics ......back to real issues at hand.

INteresting how effectively a troll can press the "right" buttons, an dknows that a new reader is the most vunerable.... but then again,if they were civilianized and polite, they (a) would not be answering this way (b) would not harass and insult new readers (c) would not purposely disrupt an otherwise reasonable question to the group at large (d) would not disrupt an insult a person asking (politely) about setting up a potential business (e) would not be harassing people on a preparation and discussion forum with prejudiced hatred and venom....but then again, if they were civilized and polite, they'd would not be pollyanna'ed trolls would they?

Dear Junior,

I'm sorry you got abused.

It is hard not to get a little OT sometimes here. There are so many articulate and intelligent voices on this group, whom I've come to trust, and I look forward to their insights.

I had really been interested in the potential answers to this post...

I'm presently trying to get my mom technically outfitted and online. I looked into Mindspring as an ISP (have won awards), but they don't have a local number close to her quasi-rural area.

There does seem to be more abusers present here on weekends (really immature and hostile) and also a real lull in substance.

Good luck to you and your dad!!!

Junior,

You're welcome. Note that the above should read DSL or ISDN!

Now listen, don't let these morons get to you. There's one in every crowd, and we've got a few here. Believe me, they don't speak for the vast majority of this forum. So, I'll assume that your remarks are also not directed at the majority here.

Yea, the focus here is Y2K, and you are somewhat off topic. And yea, I do get tired of some of the off topic stuff here myself.

But the way I look at this place is kinda like a club. We all have a common interest, but that doesn't mean that every other topic is off-limits, IMHO. After all, we do have a bunch of geeks that hang here, so I can't blame you for asking.

Hang in there.

Tick... Tock... <:00=

Junior:

I have a suspicion, shared by others, that you were dumped on by a troll(s). Some of the trolls we have to put up with seem to be tactically quite clever, I'll hand them that.

Your subject was obviously OT, so the only reason a genuine forum member should get peeved would be that you took up a thread, and there are plenty of threads around this joint that don't bring a hell of a lot to the party, as they say.

-- Peter Errington (petere@ricochet.net), September 01, 1999.

*Sigh*

Actually Junior has a very interesting rabble rousing posting history on the forum. Remember Killer (DominantSniper@yahoo.com) and so many other morphs? He also claims hes a banking programmer on other threads.

That... I DO believe.

;-D

Hey "kid," you already know how to help out Dad. Ah... the games people play.

Diane

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), September 01, 1999.

Diane

The questions posed in the original post from JR. are valid for a person who is looking for info.

What in your suspicious nature makes you think it was not a genuine call for response? Certainly, most trolls I know of do not post long, semi-intelligent messages that are OT to Y2K. It isn't inflamatory enough.

Besides....5 people use this computer that I am on and 3 of us post to this forum under different email designations or handles.

Tell me where you got your "crystal ball plug-in". karen
