Finger in the dike.........

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I am getting the feeling lately that, some of the posters on this forum think the dike is not going to break. The water has been quiet for to long! That roar in the background is not the wind! Time is up. For those that have prepared, it is time to tuck in. For those that have not, it is time to pray. The hour glass will be empty come sept. 1st.

Summer is OVER, the Military goes on alert, the kids are back in school, we are down to the wire. Gut feeling the lid will not stay on this much longer.

Flame away: We may sound complacent that's because we are complacent. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am as ready as I will ever be. I flipped out for a while and I took a break from everything. I'm just sitting back, reading, observing, keeping my ears and eyes open and waiting for the hour to come. No point in getting all stressed out over this stuff, because if you look at the big picture, there's not a whole hell of a lot any of us can do about Y2K. We can only prepare for it and that's about it. I have absolutely no control over any of it. Only those that keep their head straight and focused on keeping their family safe, will have a better chance of making it than someone who is out of control and panics. Think water and lots of it.

Sorry to disagree with you FLAME, but the herd 'aint waking up from this tranquilizer-induced coma they're in until A); the stock market topples or B); Christmas is over and done with and the realization that they have six days to get ready "just-in-case" forces it's way into the mainstream conciousness.

Barring any major utility disaster or bank run from a sinking stock market, the herd don't care, nor will they pay it any mind until it's about to bite them in the ass..

It's the hurricane syndrome.

The public is so apathetic, most activity won't take place until December (IMHO). Nothing shakes us anymore - The Turkey earthquake, the Waco scandal, and Uzi-toting guys named "Buford" who target small children are forgotten within a few days as long as life is ostensibly normal.

The government and the media don't want to be responsible for destroying what makes America "great" - the Christmas shopping season. That is when 70% of retail profits are reaped. For that reason, among others, I expect suppression of negative news. They are buying time and hoping to "fix it" before Jan.1, and they will surely find some group to blame if TSHTF after that.

I have felt so many times during this year that people were all of a sudden going to wake up & start preparing en masse, and then it didn't happen. Yes, I think there have been more converts each and every week but not significant enough numbers to be noticed in the supply of preparation products going down. There was a big rush about a year ago and long, long backorder times for many survival foods, etc., but it hasn't been that way lately, probably because more companies have gotten into the "preparations" business. Knowing how people in this country aren't much into preventative measures, even if something significant happens in the next couple weeks, I have the feeling it will make some more converts, but not the general population. I think they have to be practically knocked over the head to wake up, and I think everybody is so busy running in circles, with their cell phones glued to their ears everywhere they go, that I don't think they can possibly make the time to prepare. We are getting into the holiday season and that takes precedence over everything else. Even now the Halloween costumes and Thanksgiving decorations are out. At least for the average woman, there is a lot of time needed for all that planning for the holidays. Many people even have to start their Christmas shopping in October to be finished by December 25. Add all these holiday preparations on top of extremely busy schedules, and the fact that the average parent today can possibly imagine "disappointing" their kids come Christmas, that I think holiday preparations will take precendence over Y2K preparations even if they begin to understand and get the message. I think the majority will be so wrapped up in the coming months that it will be almost impossible to do any Y2K preparation at all. And, of course, the last week of December, they won't want to miss those after Christmas sales. I think they are cooked -- and I don't mean the turkey, unfortunately.

As the wise guys say "Fuggetaboudit". Nobody gives a shat, and anyone who cares about this problem is a whacko, same for anyone who thinks the government is too intrusive, reactionary whackos. Nobody cares. Go back to sleep.

Sorry. I meant to say "the average parent CAN'T possibly imagine disappointing their children"...... Guess I'm past my beddy time.

cassie--i know what you are saying and it makes me grieve awfully to think of what the kids are going to experience and who's fault is it, "parents" and "their parents before them" for teaching this greed, materialism, and constant right to entertainment. i have been sharing packets with all my kids friends' parents. i have already told my children that christmas is low key and low tech. i have warned them that we may be moving into a time where it will be hard for quite a while.

i guess what kind of scares me--i have always had the feeling that sept. is the beginning of things. i really am not looking forward to 9/9/99. i hope it passes uneventfully.

At first, I was trying to inform people on the importance of y2k and preparing. My exneighbor and friend from California got it right away.I wanted everyone to get it.I couldn't understand why alot of other people were not taking it as seriosly as I am. I worried about the 70 year old man who cuts my grass and has 8 kids (all under 20)most living at home. When I thought about it,his sister has a farm right out of town and kin in another state with farms. A man who works for this town first said he was'nt to concerned about this y2k thing. The more we talked I found out him and his wife bought 40+ acres, had a log cabin house built and a well. They plan to have their grown children come live with them when things get bad. What I am trying to say is alot of people may be saying one thing, but have back up plans they are not talking about openly.

FLAME AWAY, I know about the transition plan from September 1st to the end of March for the U.S. and the military on standby, but I don't understand what to expect on September 1st, could you explain a little more on this?
