here's how i explained it to my daughter the other nite:

1. Nothing happens.....life goes on pretty much as it has

2. January 1, 2000 rolls in and all heck breaks loose

a. fixes are made quickly and things get better

b. fixes fail and things get worse

3. January 1, 2000 rolls in and multiple small problems begin....leading to larger problems in a snowball effect

a. fixes are made quickly and things get better

b. fixes fail and things get worse

i think that's about all anybody can tell ya for sure, joseph......except to mention that it's best to be prepared and not need it, than to not be prepared and wish you had been

hope this helps

Joseph

Y2K problems depend on location, health and age of your family, your job, skills and on and on. Your best bet is to assess your position and study the problem. If you would like more detail for an answer you are going to have to provide more details of your basic situation. There is no one answer that fits everyone.

This of course is an international forum and blind guesses are easy, informed opinions are not. To start with where are your water, power and finances in regards to Y2K vulnerability. You are going to have to make that call. In the "about" link on the top of the main board you will find links to a Prep forum and a Prep archive. I would recommend doing some homework.

Three scenarios:

1) Your family gets very very thirsty. The water works at times (perhaps) but since the whole system is having trouble, someone gets very very sick from drinking it. 2) If you live in a cold climate, your family gets very very cold.

Oops, hit enter by mistake.

3) Your family is getting hungry, but the grocery store is almost empty, having trouble with their deliveries, and food may be rationed.

4) You need a prescription medicine that the pharmacy is out of, and having trouble getting restocked.

5) Gas prices soar, and gas is rationed. Reschedule your vacation.

6) Somebody who is also very thirsty, hungry, cold and angry comes to your door to see if there is anything there to "take" to meet their needs. Your family is very scared and in danger.

7) The government declares martial law to restore order. Don't worry about voting in the next presidential election?

Who knows what will really happen? Then again, why take chances on your family suffering from thirst, hunger, cold, or unnecessary danger?

This is the $64,000.00 question. No easy answers. Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

Will you still have a job in February if your employer can't keep his business going? Can you find another job?

If you assume the worst and prepare against it - and it doesn't happen - you win anyway.

put up enough food, water, and energy for warmth for 2 to 3 months and you and yours will probably get through things just fine.

research the fractional reserve banking system. What would you do if there was a worldwide bank collapse? What if paper money was worthless? What would you do if all water you could access caused dysentary because it contains human shit? How long could you SURVIVE if you couldn't get more food?

Joseph,

This reminds me of the essay question "Define the Universe. Give three examples."

There's millions of potential scenarios. Everything from minor inconvenience to things so oh-my-god horrible, that a sane person would rather jump off a cliff, than face.

The one that I didn't hear mentioned is the possibility of environmental contamination from industrial mishaps. In my city we had a major plant explosion, several years ago. Leveled the factory. You could hear the boom all over town. The cause was some faulty equipment. We dodged a bullet on that one, because there was nothing in that factory that was of extreme toxicity. But what if that same factory had been manufacturing pesticides or what if it had been a nuclear production facility? If a computer of embedded chip malfunctions, that controls a critical safety function, at the same time as monitoring equipment goes haywire, you could end up with thousands dead and dying, without anyone even knowing there was a problem in the making.

Any city dweller, and quite a few people in rural areas too, need to be very aware of what facilities handle hazardous substances, in their area. Have a bug-out bag, and be ready to leave in a hurry. If you are in an area where your proximity to such a facility would leave no time for evacuation, you might want to consider getting some protective gear.

Accidents happen, all the time. If I lived near such a facility, I'd take careful precautions, Y2K or not.

Hi Joseph: I can't offer three specific scenarios as there are far too many and nobody really knows for certain. But I can offer three items as food for thought...

1) Analyze your situation with great care. 2) Prepare for your worst case scenario according to your abilities. 3) Hope for the best!

Good Luck!

Regards,

Irving
