Seed saving: How do I save my own beet & carrot seeds?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have had carrots in the ground into the Fall and I have not seen any seeds produced.

Carrots are biennials. The produce seed the second year, so if that's what you want, leave this year's carrots in the ground and you will have seed next year.

Beets are biennial, too. Queen Anne's Lace is wild carrot. It will cross with your domestics is there is any in the surrounding quarter mile. Try cutting off top and one inch of root. Stand in a saucer of water. It will flower, if you are lucky it will produce viable seed. Carrot seed is not easy to keep. Plant it out the next year.

Carrots and queen annes lace usually polinate at different times, I haven't had any problems, yet.
