6:45 Story still hasn't run. Teaser was misleading. Stay tuned. Still curious whether this story is doom or broom.

The CBS y2k money story just ran:

FED is printing 50 billion (thought it was more), pictures of money being printed, armed guards at a bank, etc. "The problem isn't the computers, it's the people." What the bankers fear is when one ATM fails in some town and people nationwide run to the banks and take out there money." Danger of being robbed is being sold (told) to seniors."

I'm completely outraged by that story. They implied that the banks have long since finished. Also that taking money out of the bank meant you suffered from a phobia. Unbelievable.

For every season spin, spin, spin.

For every purpose, spin, spin, spin.

Well, they finally ran it at about 6:55. You'd have to see it to believe it. Summary: Y2K computer problems fixed long ago. Now it's irrational hoarders who are going to create a bonanza for burglars and also make it very costly to transport all that extra cash back to the Federal Reserve once it's apparent that Y2K is a non-event.

I guess the only significant thing about the story was the way the fix was presented as an absolute fact which only the feeble and ignorant are unaware of.

Whose money is it, anyway?

They're going to have a tough time selling the fact that the computers are OK after the MCI fiasco.

There's a reason this brief segment appeared today. Bankers must be getting mighty SCARED!!

I thought I heard it said that bank runs have began.....then it went into the "people and panic" yadadada

The part I found interesting was the bank woman commenting that some companies want one month's worth of cash--obviously to pay their employees in an emergency. The woman says she said to them, "Where will you put it." She was outraged at this simple, logical, sensible step.

CBS NEWS: The Y2K Dash for Cash

...Alarmed by doomsday books urging everyone to sock away thousands in cash, the Federal Reserve and banks are planning for the worst. Every armored car in America was booked months ago for Y2K weekend cash deliveries. Banks have canceled vacations, extra guards have been added, and already there are signs of some panic withdrawals...

Oh, poor babies. "Banks have canceled vacations." My whole freaking company is "On Call" from December 1 through January 31 (or later...). That's just good contingency planning.

I was bank yesterday and lady helping me noticed I had an old savings account ( from kids days) . She suggested I close it out. I didn't even realize I still had money in it. She was very nice and handed me the cash. Not much...but she could have ignored it and kept the cash in. Bought more beans!:>

"The problem isn't computers. Banks worked out the bugs in those a long time ago."

What a blatant, despicable, frigging LIE!!! Gary North has written extensively on how "95% banks on track" has magically gotten translated in the press stories to "95% done", but THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE not only says 100% DONE but DONE "A LONG TIME AGO"!!!?????!!!!!

If somebody makes a big stink and they end up retracting/correcting that crap, thats going to make Joe Sixpack all the MORE nervous and ready to go for the cash.
